That sounds like your web browser is no longer remembering your password. Check you browser settings (probably under Tools > Options) for a setting you can change to start saving passwords again, or (also?) check your new anti-virus program for a similar setting. Hope this helps. If not, please post to the list again and name your browser and new anti-spam program, and we might be able to help further. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy TonyM said the following on 1/10/2012 1:29 p.m.: > Hi Lynne, > The problem is that I can't save the LIST MODERATORS PASSWORD > which is rather a frustrating annoyance! :-) > It used to just sit in its box and was always there when I > needed it. Hi Lynne, The problem is that I can't save the LIST MODERATORS PASSWORD which is rather a frustrating annoyance! :-) It used to just sit in its box and was always there when I needed it. Sounds like the anti virus/spam software you put on turned off your auto remember passwords. You need to figure out how to turn it back on in the software Jan B Oregon On Sep 30, 2012 11:46 PM, "TonyM" <Horler@one-name.org> wrote: > Hi Lynne, > The problem is that I can't save the LIST MODERATORS PASSWORD > which is rather a frustrating annoyance! :-) > It used to just sit in its box and was always there when I > needed it. Sounds like your anti-spam program is deleting cookies and saved passwords. Either that or you managed to accidentally change your settings when you installed the anti-spam program. Hi Listowners, Can someone please offer some help to me? Recently I bought a program to guard against Virus & Sp_m etc. It came from a trusted source and I believed that it would be safe, a couple of days after purchasing and loading the program I found that none of my passwords were in the normal place. My Rootsweb problem is that I used to be able to retain my passwords in my Administrators pages, but now I appear to have lost that very important element Tony M Eng-Somerset@rootsweb.com

Trick there seems to be knowing in advance what someone will consider throwing fuel on fire. I once told someone that I thought she could do X better than I could, intending it as a compliment; she's still furious. Other'n that, it's a plan. (g) Cheryl

You're very welcome, Carl. We pretty much all learn these things by experience. One other pointer, which doesn't so much relate to SPAM as to the use of Moderation on your list... If someone on the list says something outrageous, for example, insults another member, I recommend immediately putting the entire list on "emergency moderation" to prevent a response from hitting the list and others joining in. I've used this tactic a number of times, and I've been glad I did. And I learned to use it because I witnessed a number of cases where a list erupt into flames that could easily have been prevented if the listadmin had taken control of the situation sooner. You can keep letting "normal" messages get through, only blocking those throwing fuel on the fire. Unsubbing him in such an abrupt manner was not the right thing to do. Best thing to do is say 'Sorry', make an explanation and re-sub him....and take a deep breath and count to 10 next time a subscriber makes a mistake. Irene
I thank all who gave me advice today. The majority felt that I was within my rights, but over reacted. I have therefore re-scribed Tom, but put him on mod. Thank you all. Carl Hommel
Is the poster's first name Mark? If so he is hitting other lists -- however -- without the prices this time. Joan P.S. Don't concern yourself with threats made to RootsWeb. I've had that threat made many times -- ha, ha -- lets me know I'm doing my job! Every member deserves a warning before being unsubbed and banned. When someone has mis-behaved, in any way, just moderate them. That gives you the control you need until the matter is resolved. By and large, adults are not used to being reprimanded, and most do not take it well, especially when it comes "out of the blue" and - from their perspective - unjustified. Explain the rule they just broke, give them the benefit of the doubt that they did it innocently, and just keep them on moderation for awhile in case they try to retaliate on the list. This is not a banishing offense, unless it's a commercial dealer spamming the lists. nope. Just a subscriber by name of Tom. The list of books he was trying to sell are well marked-down, clear a reference to reduce his collection of books. Carl, I am not so sure that removing him was needed, but if that was what you chose to do then there is nothing wrong with it. Now, reply to his latest rant with the correct link to the Help Desk to help him properly "report you" as he threatened, because you've done nothing but what you are supposed to do as a List Admin, IMHO, or else simply ignoring his ranting at this point for the same reason would be less inflammatory. Carl, how do you know that this isn't a commercial bookseller, in which case your action was entirely reasonable. In any event, all subscribers are deemed to be aware of RootsWeb's AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) which reads, in part, "Content submitted for the purpose of commercial use, advertising or fee for service is prohibited." The AUP can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/rootsweb/aup.html If this isn't a commercial bookseller, moderation would have been a better choice but now that he's threatened you, I'd just leave him off ... that isn't the kind of attitude up with which any list admin. should have to put ... This morning one of my subscribers on a County List posted a message offering for sale several hard cover and soft cover genealogy books, with prices. I immediately removed him from the list and put him on the Ban list. I then told him why. He is now threating me, "If you do not re-subscribe me to your list serv, I will make a complaint to Rootsweb and notify other local historians what you have done". If it were me, I would base any decision as to letting him back on the list on his prior behavior. While it was not good for him to threaten, his being removed and banned from a list abruptly without warning, especially if he did not even know he was not supposed to post the for-sale items, probably caused him to overreact. I would not want to lose a good listmember because of his knee-jerk reaction to being unsubbed and banned. You can also tell him that he is welcome to post his for-sale genealogy items to the Gen-Mat list, which was created for that purpose. http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Genealogical_Materials/GEN-MAT.html Carol At 02:19 PM 9/29/2012, Carl Hommel wrote: >This morning one of my subscribers on a County List posted a message >offering for sale several hard cover and soft cover genealogy books, with >prices.
