Hi Anne, you can delete my MARGRIE surname one. IF I get back to research I can set it up again. Throwing this out there for discussion. We have WAY too many lists. And many aren't used. I am currently working on ways to drive traffic and signups to location and subject lists, but Surname lists are a bit of problem -- many are unused and clutter up the landscape. I suspect we have between 15,000 and 25,000 surname lists. So Surname lists that are subject to deletion: - Lists that have never had post - Lists that have no owner and less than 10 subscribers and no posts in the last 2 years - Lists that have no registered owner (as of April 30th), less than 10 subscribers and no posts within the last 2 years If anyone wants to make an argument for Surname lists that get no use, please make it. Or better yet, show them some care. And if you have lists that you think just need to be deleted, send me the list and a quick justification. We want 2 kinds of lists: 1) lists that are active and 2) lists that have that potential. Anne -- Anne Mitchell http://clustergenealogy.com <http://finding-forgotten-stories.com>

That list does exist: https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/postorius/lists/margrie.rootsweb.com/ Some Surname lists are subject to deletion: - Lists that have never had post - Lists that have no owner and less than 10 subscribers and no posts in the last 2 years - Lists that have no registered owner (as of April 30th), less than 10 subscribers and no posts within the last 2 years We have tens of thousands of surname lists that see no traffic and obscure the subject and location lists. I tried searching for my name but couldn’t find the mailing list that I set up, does that mean that it has been deleted please? I set it up on ROOTSWEB ages ago. Thanks for answering Diane Sent from my iPad
We used to be able to set size limits of posts to the list. Now with all the stuff that Rootsweb puts at the bottom of each post when a lister replies all the stuff is also included with the reply so we have in the info twice. Not so bad with single posts but with digests it is horrible. I have tried, in the past, not posting those emails that go over the limit I set when I checked out the post and saw it was only a sentence long but had a number of repeated emails attached. I used to send them back and tell the poster do delete the repeated stuff and then write to the list saying the same. -- Pat Connors http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
You can't sign into the RootsWeb site, and the new login is currently only for access to the Mailing Lists. The Message Boards on RootsWeb are there, not accessible through Favorites or Alerts or anything else, and they don't have any Administrative Tools. The Message Boards are only really workable through Ancestry, if you want to get to all of your options as an Administrator. I agree with Pat. I use Firefox and have had no problem in getting to my Board Admin Center at all. Lin. In answer to ????? ;) First part. Its nice to have some one on LO who has real answers. Second part; Mailman is wrote in linux (sudo) and python. This is not an easy complex to work with or fix. Mailman 2.7 and previously used version and mail man 3 soon to upgrade is a very complex system to put it all together. If you click the link about mailman docs I been sending any one as admin can see in real time just what its all about on the programming end. Hope this helps. Thank you for the help. I spoke wrong , I am discarding posts and not rejecting them. I think after awhile I will “get it” and move on . If I ever remember how to post to one of the boards I run..... I will send messages suggesting that people join the lists. would there be a problem with this message? Messages to the board are shown only on the board. If you choose you can also join the genealogy surname list. [email protected] Just send the word 'subscribe Being old is not easy~! Just ask the list owner to add you as an admin and you will be able to do all the same functions Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 18-Apr-18 5:22 PM, Timothy Stowell wrote: > Beside one of my lists it shows me as a subscriber and a moderator. > > It appears the only thing I can do with that function is to approve, reject > or discard held messages but can not add or remove subscribers. > > So this status is different than when I was listed as an assistant > (forgotten the exact wording) in the old system? > > Tim Stowell
You obviously haven't heard the one about teach a man to fish have you Give a man a fish and you feed him for one day teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime ie show them how to do it themselves, rather than give them a short answer or you will get the same question from them again Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 18-Apr-18 5:21 PM, Dan M wrote: > Your comment about sending a member on a goose chase rather than give > the simple answer.. > > If you were having a burger bbq, and some one ask for a burger, you > going to send them to the butcher shop to find the source of the beef > you have handy? > > Just give simple answers. > Your ???? is noted ;) > Dan
Beside one of my lists it shows me as a subscriber and a moderator. It appears the only thing I can do with that function is to approve, reject or discard held messages but can not add or remove subscribers. So this status is different than when I was listed as an assistant (forgotten the exact wording) in the old system? Tim Stowell
Your comment about sending a member on a goose chase rather than give the simple answer.. If you were having a burger bbq, and some one ask for a burger, you going to send them to the butcher shop to find the source of the beef you have handy? Just give simple answers. Your ???? is noted ;) Dan On 04/18/2018 08:27 AM, Nivard Ovington wrote: > ????????????????? > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > On 18-Apr-18 4:25 PM, Dan M wrote: >> Read all the hits. >> Give the member his answer without the redirect. >> Thats the point. >> Some one ask a simple question. >> Give the simple answer. >> >> On Wed, Apr 18, 2018, 8:23 AM Nivard Ovington <[email protected]> >> wrote: >> >>> I really have no idea what you are on about >>>
What we have at present is to post to the list and have folks re register to rw. This might help with the non member being caught. I have had several who were being caught register yesterday and posted since. I noticed the 2 who posted were not caught again. Send them the home page directly. Discard obvious spam.
