    2. Is this SPAM? ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Free Services Author: listowners@rootsweb.com at internet-ext Date: 8/20/97 5:40 PM Hi, Hope you don't mind me dropping a note to let all who are interested know about the following free services. TREE TOPS FAMILY TREE QUERY SERVICE: The idea is to send your FAMILY TREE QUERY of no more than 40 words which must include a postal address, and it will go on the television screen on Sky News fastext for one week and be seen all over the UK, Ireland and Europe. This is a FREE service and you do not need to have the facility to use it. At the end of each month a copy of the un-edited version of the queries are in the TREE TOPS GENEALOGICAL JOURNAL which also contains other bits of information and useful titbits. This is available for sale each month and is bought by researchers in many other countries so once your message has gone on screen you do get 'passed around' a bit. The 2nd FREE service is called 'WE'LL MEET AGAIN" which is also a query service but more for the living, old pals, war buddies, 20c descendants etc. Again 40 words, there is no Print out for this service. All queries for the above two services to be sent to:- tree.tops@virgin.net putting TREE TOPS QUERY on the message line or by snail mail to P.O. BOX 116, SWINDON, WILTS SN3 2SX, ENGLAND No limit to the number of queries you can send but you will only get ONE on per week. The 3rd FREE service is a similar service for those who have Canadian research. This is run by Mary in Canada and is called MAPLE LEAF QUERIES. Maple Leaf is a similar service for those who have Canadian research. Send your query and it will go on our web page for one month and can be seen by any surfers of the net. Mary says please BE SURE TO INCLUDE DATES AND remember that Canada is a very large country. Please PROVIDE A LOCATION, A PROVINCE AT MINIMUM, if at all possible. Send to:- traces@cadvision.com putting MAPLE LEAF QUERY on the message line. Mary also has PUBLICATIONS and holds indexes, which are ongoing, referring to immigration (CANADIAN BORDER ENTRY LISTS, 1908-1918; PRE 1865 PASSENGER LISTS FROM NEWSPAPERS), and has started an index for ALBERTA RESEARCHERS called: SOUTH WEST ALBERTA GENEALOGICAL INDEX. All searches are FREE; SMALL CHARGE for references. Check our web page for more information. Home page: http://www.cadvision.com/traces/ Tree Tops: http://www.cadvision.com/traces/treetops.html Wiltshire Index Service: http://www.cadvision.com/traces/wis.html Hope this information has been of some help. Regards Carol (Tree Tops)

    2. Always before I have refrained from forwarding items I believed non-genealogical in nature. Please forgive me for breaking this rule; however, I believe the following should be given as much dissemination as possible. ---------- > > > > [The] President has sign into law a bill that affects all veterans. The kicker to this is that the V.A. can not put out any information on this law. It has to be done by word of moth or letters from one veteran to another. I checked this all out and it is true. > If you have not registered at a V.A. Hospital since Oct 1, 1996 and if you do not registered with them before Oct.1, 1998 you will lose all medical benefits for life. To register you need DD-214 form. I called my county V.A. section and they are mailing the forms to me. Check either with the county V.A. section or with the V.A. Hospital near you. You can also call any V.A. Office for help on this. Please pass this alone , Thanks Dwayne's addition follows: >> I called my local VA Hospital and forms are being mailed to me. Dwayne Crandall

    1. Re[2]: Looking for a few lists to archive
    2. Dayna, I hesitate to get into the "copywright" fray knowing the history of this list and did not so some months back. However, you've asked some questions that probably should be addressed. Here is my take (note I am not offering legal advice or professional opinion), just summarizing what has been sent to me in the past from attorneys: e-mail is copywright protected, so are web pages it doesn't matter whether there is a note of copywright or not, although, it's probably a good idea to inform readers so. if copying is done, it falls under either "fair use" or it doesn't If not fair use, then it's a violation of copywright law. What is fair use? Well, that is often difficult to define; however, it is NOT something as simple as 20% of the document. Copying of facts alone is fair use; however, the manner of presentation of the facts may be protected (just think about history books - of course some lately are trying to be politically correct by changing facts, but I digress). Noncommercial copying is usually protected under "fair use" but note the definition for noncommercial indicates whether the copier received money for the product or the author MIGHT have been expected to receive money. Thus, it doesn't matter if you or your organization is non-profit or a commercial enterprise or whether you actually paid for something or not. Hope this clears up things a bit. 1. Re: How do we deal with MIME format?
    2. Not quite. The encoding depends on a number of factors, for example, if the size of the file is over some limit, the sending conglomeration or the receiving unit might encode a message. On my receiving end, if the message is over about 20k, or has graphics, it gets encoded. So far, this has not been much of a problem, though, since decoders are readily available. Author: listowners@rootsweb.com at internet-ext Date: 12/29/97 8:29 PM Someone can correct me if I am wrong on this, but I would have thought the whole issue of mime encoding is academic. It has always been my understanding that irregardless of the capabilities of anyone's hardware, software or provider, that email messages (especially those sent to lists) were to be sent in plain ascii text. Being the "least common denominator", doesn't this allow everyone, even those with dinosaur systems to participate, without constant pressure to upgrade? Wendy Dolphay
