I agree that many lists died years ago. The vast majority of the surname lists are the ones that totally fell asleep and should not be considered for moving. I do have some county lists I moved to groups.io that were long dead on RW that actually perked back to life. If we had a set up like groups.io here on Rootsweb I don't think we would be in the situation we are now. What I love about the new set up is an individual list group becomes more like a mini web page. I wasn't thrilled about moving several hundred county lists, but after some serious thought, I did the migration. I apologize to anyone I may have been crabby to the past month and a half. :) Let's keep at it with Ancestry to fix the boards before they suffer a similar fate. Just want to say that I enjoyed my time as a listowner and being apart of this community. Over the years we have lost good people when they went to join their ancestors but losing the mailing lists seems like a terminal illness of the Internet -- if you know what I mean. At any rate, I would like to thank all of you who have helped me and have been a help to others. I would like to give a special shoutout to Joan Young who without her assistance I would not have survived all these years. Once again all, hope to see on in the io lists. Sincerely, Joan Asche member since the late 1990s.
I wouldn't worry about it at this point. I will say you help to prove my belief that lists really died (most of them) long ago. This is one reason I didn't move any of my lists to io or elsewhere and have emphasized that we have allied boards (which hopefully will be fixed and the glitches tended to) and Facebok groups. Keith, as Joan wrote, the boards are beyond flaky at the moment. This morning I received two emails from Ancestry, each with the subject "Your new board creation request." Both messages denied my request to create new boards. The only glitch? I had requested those boards be created years (yes, years!) ago. They were created back then and I've been the boards' admin ever since. Since Saturday I've been unable to edit or move any messages. This morning I was unable to post. I'm leaving the boards alone for a little while until they get straightened out. Lynne
Keith- But that is yet another part of the existing glitches with the boards. The Board Info is blank for most boards -- those with admins. Mine are all blank and nothing I've tried to do fixes that. Their response, if you click that button, is they will not create a new Board. I spent my career managing the production of complex software. It is clear to me that Ancestry has no clue how to do this. Did anyone ever hear them mention a software version, a beta test, or a release date? It seems to me they are chasing an imaginary pot of gold at the end of the DNA testing rainbow. to update a list (closed months ago) to show the new io.group? Just started it last night! Thanks, Chris
Keith- I'm not sure this is what is happening BUT I can tell you that due to glitches as they work on the boards currently, there are a lot of boards that have a Volunteer to Admin link on them that already have an admin. Obviously that doesn't explain why the rejection says they won't create a new board which is not what you were asking for but it may actually be that the existing board already has an admin despite the volunteer notice. Nivard, Yes, I was signed in. All I had to do was click the button. I was not asked to then provide an ID or e-mail address. The bot reply came to my e-mail address. Hi Keith Were you signed in when you applied? Just wondering if that might be a factor? But I know there have been/are glitches with the boards of late Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 02/03/2020 06:33, Keith Meintjes wrote: > Again, > > If they turn out the lights at Rootsweb, how would we know? > > I am simply irritated. Glen and Keith, I received blank refusal messages this morning too re my asking to admin old Boards. Very strange. But all my lists got moved in time and people have joined. Glen, hope we weren't applying for the same Boards. :-) See everyone on the new lists. Diane M Diane Rogers, British Columbia, Canada https://about.me/mdianerogers
I was surprised the messages are still coming! Keith and Glen that sounds about par for any website Ancestry owns or makes rules for . Maybe they'll reconsider... unless they have you black-listed as troublemakera. Rootsweb/Ancestry won't let me re-register to get to my WorldConnect tree to update it. (I've tried many times and even wrote for help and sent clips of messages from the registration page) I've had my website for abt. 20 years and always kept it updated. I had about 37,000 well documented entries when they froze it. Maybe they are afraid I'll remove it instead. They reformatted it and deleted all the sources, documentation and notes so it's value to others as a dependable research site is diminished, and I can't use it as a back-up Anne Fender Halford -----Original Message----- From: Valorie Zimmerman <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, March 2, 2020 12:35 AM To: Listowners list for Rootsweb list admins and moderators <[email protected]> Subject: [LO] Re: Lists closing On Sun, Mar 1, 2020 at 9:35 PM Timothy Stowell <[email protected]> wrote: > I trust someone is turning out the lights as we leave! > > Tim Stowell > Not me -- I'll miss this list. Me too Keith - I got 5 of those "for no good reason" messages this morning. Regards - Glen C.
