I only heard about it on LO. I did look in my address for a note but there is not one. So there was nothing to read ! Here that is. I just subscribed to LIST_UPDATE. I received info that "General information about the mailing list, including links to the list archives, can be found at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/list-update.html " However, this is a dead link. What is the correct URL? Thanks, Mary
I checked with a local woman I know and saw in IM this morning... she had not received the message. However, as her ISP is AOL, I presume that she will find it in her spam folder when she can take time away from the project she is working on. The message seemed to indicate it went to everyone who subscribes. Cheers, Lauren
I am wondering if the graphic boxes used to subscribe to specific mailing lists that you can find on many websites will still be usable or if those webmasters should start thinking about removing them? Or possibly new graphics will be provided with working links if the originals will no longer be working? Becky
Some advance warning to list admins regarding new features, procedures, etc. would certainly have been nice!! Or like a little check list of things we can do to make this as painless as possible! What happens to the Accept list? Is this list going to be automatically carried over to the new system or do I loose them? My list falls into the A-C group and I am not looking forward to problems with spam blockers, white lists, etc. I have already notified my list that I will be sending out test messages after the switch with a number in the subject so subscribers will be able to easily verify that they are receiving the messages. This morning I saved the page that lists all my 750 L and D subscribers just in case something goes wrong. Later today I will be copying the tag-lines along with all the pages in the "Edit Files" section. Just how many list owners do not know any thing about this ? Was there going to be a Special announcement to all list owners in their private mail ? Is it legal to switch systems and leave people in the dark ? How many dont even know there is a page to get ready for this ? Just wondering. Dan M
I am thinking this new system is just going to whack rootsweb out of being useful any more ?? Any one know enough to enlighten me on this ? Dan M
Hi, The list update schedule page is back up. We are still looking into why, but the page stopped working sometime this morning around 6 AM. We apologize for the inconvenience and confusion this may have caused. Please check the page often for updates to the schedule and other list-update related information. Here is the link to the page or you can get to it by clicking on the link located on http://lists.rootsweb.com <http://lists.rootsweb.com/> : http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html Regards, Melissa RootsWeb Staff
Hi Rob, Melissa: Well, I guess this is what I get for taking a week away from the Beta testers list! I was a bit surprised to learn that most all of my 82 or so lists will migrate on Tuesday. Not much time to go in and save all the customized files. Not what I had planned for my weekend. Ah, the joys of having so many clan-whatever lists. LOL Yeah... I know... should have realized it was inevitable and begun to "back them up" earlier. However, I would have thought that Admins would have been given more notice than the wee hours of Saturday morning for migration on Tuesday. What of those admins that are away on vacation? They will be none too pleased to return to find all their files wiped out. Congratulations on getting the system this far. Here's hoping the transition will proceed smoothly. I think the users will like the new software. Admins will get used to it. Thanks for all you do! Cheers, Lauren

This is required by RFC by any sort of subscription based list. ->snip<- My understanding is that ALL messages on ALL lists will be required to have a tagline giving UNSUBSCRIBE instructions. That will cause all kinds of unpleasant noise from newsgroup readers, none of which will be kind to rootsweb.com. Even if those footers are inserted on the mailing list side only, replies to those list-side messages will get to the newsgroup with the footers included as part of the replied-to message.

Will we be able NOT to have those or to amend them to something shorter - or will they automatically be included in full? For the newsgroup geteways I do not want them at all, as that is one more thing which makes it obvious to newsgroups readers that the message orginated on a mailing list. For a list with a long name like some locations/geographical areas lists I would hope it could be up to the list manager. Margaret
I found the link to the migration schedule from lists.rootsweb.com tonight, and have been having some discussions in IRC with other list managers - one or two who have done beta testing - and some who who have not. Is that list for ALL lists? How about the 20 or so which have gateways to Usenet newsgroups? Is my ALT-GENEALOGY moving on Monday? I sure hope not! There are some special considerations for those newsgroup gateway lists and I think the list managers should be consulted about possible problems. For one thing - in no circumstance should it be obvious to the readers on the newsgroups side of the gateways (except maybe in the headers) that messages are coming to them from a mailing list. My understanding is that ALL messages on ALL lists will be required to have a tagline giving UNSUBSCRIBE instructions. That will cause all kinds of unpleasant noise from newsgroup readers, none of which will be kind to rootsweb.com. Even if those footers are inserted on the mailing list side only, replies to those list-side messages will get to the newsgroup with the footers included as part of the replied-to message. I'm also concerned about reject lists and about whether there will be -I lists. Mostly I am concerned that I know nothing at all about the impending moves and that list managers have not been given the update schedules in email (these are email lists, after all) and not given that information BEFORE their subscribers see it.
