Josie, I'm so glad you posted this. It had been my understanding that my Lindsey Aunt had changed the spelling of my family's surname from Lindsay to Lindsey in the late 1930's to 1940's. And then I read a long article stating that Lindsay was of Scottish origin, Lindsey was of Irish origin. Origin hasn't anything to do with the spelling does it? in this case?. sandiet josie bass wrote: > > hi, i am the list admin for both the lindsey and lindsay list. rootsweb > set up the lindsey even tho i asked them to please keep just the one list, > so i adopted the lindsey too in order to keep up with posts lindsey/ay and > help others to keep up as well. not necessarily Irish as many Scot s went to North Ireland after the British holocaust and when they get what they were promised they sailed to America. clerks, census takers, courts, lawyers all differ in their spellings my dad always said we were ay and could not be kin to any ey - where he got that was no doubt from his pa or ma, which could be wrong. since i haven't found my William H. Linsey of Virginia parents i don't know. William m. Polly ALVIS in 1802 in Augusta County, VA at the Scotish Presby Ch, Tinkling Springs and his son Zachariah somehow got to Huntsville, Alabama and m. Martha Montgomery, they lived in Lawrence Co. AL, and when she died by 1849 he married Nancy Harrison of Athens, AL in Cumberland Presb. Ch. poor Nancy has a house full of step kids and 9 of her own, but they raised them lived thru the war and reconstruction. the kids went to school and the girls became proficient in music - he was a farmer and Nancy's father owned a gin. where are his brothers & sisters????? some Lindsay's out of Lawrence AL crossed over to the Union side. josie but At 06:56 PM 4/29/01 -0400, you wrote: >Josie, >I'm so glad you posted this.
