Josie, I can't place your William Lindsay of Colchester, VA, but am very interested in the possible connection of some of the colonial Virginia Lindsay families to the McCarty family. There's a bunch of Lindsays/Lindseys in Stafford-Richmond Co., VA, in the late 1600s and early 1700s, who use given names that are common in the McCarty family. I wonder if these Lindsays/Lindseys have any tie to the McCartys, and if anyone can place these Lindsays/Lindseys. Stafford Co. court records show a JOHN LINDSEY, servant of John HAWKINS, as a runaway on 9 Oct. 1691 (Stafford Order Bk. 1691-2, 9 Oct. 1691, p. 215). On 7 July 1703, a JOHN LINDSEY was paid 1000 pounds from the estate of William BROCKENBROUGH in Richmond Co. (Richmond Miscellaneous Records 1699-1704, p. 20A). On 4 March 1703/4, the inventory of a THADDEUS LINDSEY was recorded in Richmond; the estate was inventoried at the house of Alexander FLEMING (Richmond WB 1709-17, f. 66v; see also Richmond Ct. Order Bk. 1702-4, 3 Nov. 1703, p. 287). A JAMES LINDSEY begins to appear in Richmond records by 2 May 1705, when the court ordered him (noting he was of Sittenbourne Parish) to be summoned to answer charges for missing church (Richmond OB 4, 1701-8, p. 62). JOHN LINDSEY is mentioned in the same court entry: Dr. Robert CLARKE, assignee of JOHN LINDSEY, was suing John and Mary DALTON for debt (ibid.). The next court entry (4 Oct. 1705) mentions the case again, noting that CLARKE won the case (ibid., p. 87). JAMES LINDSEY shows up again on 4 Oct. 1705, with a note that he was being sued by Katherine GWYN, admx. of the will of Major David GWYN, though Katherine GWYN chose not to sue (ibid., p. 89). In the same court session, the case of John BOWEN vs. JAMES LINDSEY was dismissed as well (ibid., p. 90). Around the same time (my photocopy does not have a date), the case of JAMES LINDSEY of Sittenbourne Parish was presented to the grand jury and continued until next court session (ibid., p. 93). The 7 March 1710/11 will of Maurice CLARK in Richmond leaves a tract of land to servant man Dennis LINDSEY (Richmond WB 1709-17, p. 40). On 4 March 1726/7, DENNIS LINDSEY and wife Barbara received, along with son JOHN LINDSEY, a lease for life for land in Stafford Co. (Stafford DB 1722-1728, pp. 369-70). The land was a trace of 170 acres leased from John FITZHUGH of St. Paul's Parish, Stafford. DENNIS LINDSEY appears again in a list of those owing the estate of John TOWARD in Stafford in 1733 (Stafford WB M,1729-48 p. 241-243). The estate account was recorded 13 Apr. 1736. A JOHN LINDSEY (son of DENNIS LINDSEY, above?) is in a list of those owing the estate of Chandler FOWKE in Stafford in 1745 (Stafford WB O, p. 139). The Register of St. Paul's Parish, Stafford/King George Co., VA, shows DENNIS LINDSEY and wife Barbara having the following children christened in the parish: Anne, 14 Oct. 1725; Moses, 31 Jan. 1727/8; Anne, 20 Jan. 1730/1; Wilkson (daughter), 20 July 1733; Sarah, 10 Feb. 1735/6; and Dennis, 8 May 1738. A MARGARET LINDSEY married John HAYNES on 8 Sept. 1728 in St. Paul's Parish. On 3 Jan. 1739/40, a John LINDSEY (son of DENNIS?) married Sarah Cliff in St. Paul's Psh. On 15 Jan. 1750, a JOHN LINDSEY m. Elizabeth GLASS in Overwharton Psh., Stafford Co. This is possibly the JOHN LINDSEY whose inventory is recorded in Richmond Co. on 29 May 1771 (Richmond WB 1767-87, p. 84). On 5 Aug. 1742, a BARBARA LINDSEY married Josiah BRANSAM in St. Paul's Psh. If this is the widow of DENNIS LINDSEY (above), then he seems to have died by this date. I've tracked some of the descendants of this DENNIS LINDSEY to Richmond, Warren, and Columbia Co., GA. The possible McCarty connection? The given names Dennis and Thaddeus are common in the McCarty family, who did live in the same region of VA as these LINDSEYS. If anyone can place these LINDSEYs, would be happy for information. Because they used Dennis as a given name, for a long time I thought that my own DENNIS LINDSEY (b. 1700-10, d. 1762, Granville Co., NC) was a descendant of DENNIS LINDSEY of Richmond-Stafford. I now don't think that is possible, though my line may somehow be related to these LINDSEYs. I've also tracked a number of early WILLIAM LINDSEYs in Virginia, and will send information about him or them in a subsequent posting. I hope this information will be of use to someone in sorting out the early VA Lindsay/Lindsey lines.
