In an earlier response to Josie's posting about a William Lindsay of Colchester, VA, today, I promised to send some information about a number of William Lindseys I've tracked through some early colonial records in Virginia. Can anyone place any of the William Lindsays/Lindseys discussed below? One of these appears in Old Rappahannock Co. records by November 1684, when the case of WILLIAM LINDSEY vs. William LAKE is mentioned in the county order book (Old Rappahannock OB 1683-5, p. 62). The next court session, 4 Dec. 1684, says that Capt. Sebastian GINGE was also granted judgement in a case vs. WILLIAM LINDSEY (ibid., p. 63). On 10 Feb. 1685/6, WILLIAM LINDSEY is in a list of debtors to the estate of George BOYCE (Old Rappahannock WB 1682-7, pp. 97-100). On 5 Aug. 1685, Arthur FORBES/FORBUS was granted an attachment against the estate of WILLIAM LINDSEY (Old Rappahannock OB 1685-7, p. 109). The county order book for 2 Dec. 1685 notes that Edward KEELING had been granted reference to next court session in his case against WILLIAM LINDSEY (ibid., p. 129). The minutes for the same court session note that attachment had been granted to David WILSON vs. the estate of John KING in the hands of WILLIAM LINDSEY and James KELLY (ibid.). WILLIAM LINDSEY appears again in the court minutes for March 1686, in a suit of William ACERS against him (ibid., p. 150). WILLIAM LINDSEY seems to have died by 3 Feb. 1687/8, when his widow ELIZABETH LINDSEY (who from this point appears as his administrator) appeared as defendant in a case filed by Thomas TOMLIN (Old Rappahannock OB 1687-9, p. 54). On 4 April 1688, ELIZABETH LINDSEY was granted order of administration on the estate of her deceased husband WILLIAM LINDSEY (ibid., p. 59). She gave bond at the same court with Henry AWBREY and Walter JONES, and is identified in this court entry as ELIZABETH LINCH; the court records hereafter refer to her and her husband as LINCH/LINCHE a number of times. At the same court session, John MILLS, John EVANS, and Robert MILLS were ordered to make inventory and appraisement of the estate of WILLIAM LINDSEY (ibid., p. 60). On 2 May 1688, the case of ELIZABETH LINDSEY vs. Thomas TOMLIN was referred to next court session (ibid., p. 69). Old Rappahannock DB 1686-8 has an 11 May 1688 deed of Benjamin GOODRICH, exr. of John FRY, acknowledging that FRY had sold to WILLIAM LINCH of Rappahannock Co. 300 acres that were being assigned to WILLIAM LINCH's widow and admx. ELIZABETH LINCH. The land transfer is dated 11 May 1688 (pp. 414-5). On 2 Oct. 1688, ELIZABETH LINCH, sold 50 of the 300 acres to Patrick CARNWELL(ibid., p. 436). On 1 Aug. 1688, Thomas TOMLIN was ordered to pay John EVANS for his attendance in court to testify in the case of ELIZABETH LINDSEY vs. Tomlin (Old Rappahannock OB 1687-9, p. 82). On 6 Sept. 1688, the case of ELIZABETH LINDSEY vs. James FULLERTON was referred to the next court session (ibid., p. 88). In November 1688, an order was granted to ELIZABETH LINDSEY for the non-appearance of Arthur FORBES (ibid., p. 105). The court entries immediately following this note that CORNELIUS LINDSEY had been granted non-suit against Joseph CORNELL, who did not appear in court, and that CORNELIUS LINDSEY acknowledged Dennis McCARTY as his attorney (ibid.). Court minutes for 2 Jan. 1689 note that the case of ELIZABETH LINDSEY vs. Arthur FORBES had again been referred (ibid., p. 111). On 3 July 1689, ELIZABETH LINDSEY was granted judgment against FORBES; this entry refers to Elizabeth as LINCH, and admx. of WILLIAM LINCH (ibid., p. 119). In June 1689, ELIZABETH LINDSEY received an order vs. David MEREDITH, who did not appear in court, and her case against Robert COLEMAN was referred to next session (ibid., p. 124). On 4 July 1689, Benjamin GOODRICH was granted an attachment against the estate of ELIZABETH LINDSEY (ibid., p. 125). On 2 Oct. 1689, Robert COLEMAN was granted judgment vs. the estate of WILLIAM LINCHE (ibid., p. 133). The same day, ELIZABETH LINCHE, admx. of WILLIAM LINCHE, was granted a referral in her case against Rebecca TOMLIN, exrx. of Robert TOMLIN (ibid., p. 134). In Sept. 1689, Edward THOMAS, assignee of Willaim STANNARD, was granted judgment against the estate of WILLIAM LINCHE (ibid., p. 136). The same court session mentions a JAMES LINDSEY who was subpoenaed by George CUMMINGS in the case of CUMMINGS vs. Angell JACOBUS, and who did not appear in court (ibid.). JAMES LINDSEY is mentioned again on 6 Nov. 1689, when court minutes note that he was too sick to appear at the September court (ibid., p. 142). JAMES LINCHE appears again in the 7 Nov. court minutes, again with reference to the case of CUMMINGS vs. JACOBUS, which was being referred (ibid., p. 144). On 4 Dec. 1689, JAMES LINCHE is mentioned again in this case, which was again referred (ibid., p. 147). On 3 Oct. 1689, non suit was granted to James BOUGHAN vs. ELIZABETH LINCH, she not appearing in court (OB 1`689-92, p. 138). On 3 Apr. 1690, the suit of ELIZABETH LINCHE vs. Benjamin GOODRICH was referred to next court (ibid., pp. 161, 168). On 8 May 1690, judgment was given to ELIZABETH LINCHE, admx. of WILLIAM LINCHE, against Joseph GOODRICH for debt to the estate (ibid., p. 171). The court minutes for July 1690 mention that the case of ELIZABETH LINCHE, assignee of Walter Jones in the case of JONES vs. Thomas GORBELL, was being referred to the next session (ibid., p. 180). On 5 Aug. 1691, the case of Richard ROBINSON vs. ELIZABETH LINCHE, exrx. of WILLIAM LINCHE, was referred to the following session (ibid., p. 218). This suit was again referred in September of the same year (ibid., p. 233) and Feb. 1691 (ibid., p. 245). At the same court session (Feb. 1691), John MILLS received a court order for the non appearance of ELIZABETH LINCH (ibid., p. 246). In July 1692, Richard ROBINSON received judgment against the estate of WILLIAM LINDSEY in the hands of ELIZABETH LINDSEY, his relict and administratrix, for debt, and a horse was seized from the estate. Once again, can anyone identify this WILLIAM LINDSEY with wife Elizabeth? I don't find any information about him in the various published accounts regarding other early Lindsay/Lindsey families in Virginia.
