Pat, I don't mean to sound critical, but are you sure it's Madison County, Alabama and not maybe Madison County, Tennessee? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pat Lindsey" <plindsey@alltel.net> To: <LINDSEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2001 2:52 AM Subject: Re: [LINDSEY] DAVID LINDSEY- > I have the parent of Mary Jane Lindsey born in Madison Co., AL abt. 1830. > E-mail me direct > plindsey@alltel.net > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <Haclutts@aol.com> > To: <LINDSEY-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, April 30, 2001 8:28 PM > Subject: [LINDSEY] DAVID LINDSEY- > > > > Have been searching for the parents of MARY JANE LINDSEY -born in > Madison > > CO. al abt 1830 , she married in 1847. Looking fo info on John W. Lindsey. He was in SC in Dec 15. 1815. That is when his son David was born. He moved sometime after that to GA. He married Elizabeth Williams 4-5-1822 in Irwin County, GA. Elizabeth was listed as a widow on the 1830 Irwin census. She drew land in the 1832 Lottery as his widow. His son David is my 2x gr-grandfather who married Sarah Kline, and he died in the Civil War. I have his line on but am trying to trace his parents and perhaps siblings. Any help would be appreciated. Suzi Motley in NC

Something funny--I am Denise Lindsey Wells and my great-grandmother was Elizabeth Thompson Lindsey, b May 1850 in Georgia! Denise L. Hi Fred, My family history is not at all clear. My great-grandfather is George Wesley William Lindsey (or some combination of those names). I'm thinking he may have originally been William, but later Wesley. I have lots of documentation for George W, Wesley, and William. None of it overlaps so if you put it all together, you come up with a "whole" person all of which fits together! The earliest record is an 1850 census for Emanuel Co., GA in which William Lindsey (age 10) appears with Anney (age 6), Lourania (age 25) and Mary (age 57). Is Lourania the mother (a little young) and Mary the grandmother? of is Mary the mother (a little old)? The census record I have is a transcription, so I'm thinking it will be worth my effort to look at the original. In the 1860 census, George W. Lindsey (age 20) lives in dwelling #364 while Mary and Lourania live in dwelling # 367 with Lourania's new husband. There are no other Lindseys (regardless of spelling) in the entire county. In the 1870 census, Westley (sic) Lindsey (age 25, lost 5 years in the calculation) lives with his wife and children. In the 1880 census, Westley (sic) Lindsey (age 40, regained his 5 years) lives with his wife and children. I have not found him in the 1900 census although I do not believe he died until after 1903. Civil war and pension records support the history of William, George W and Wesley being one person still using three names. You asked about my Phillips connection. It's equally ambiguous. I have no proof for this story which has been shared by one cousin and has been partially, verified by an independent source. Mary Lindsey (above) apparently knew (in the Biblical sense) Royal Budd Phillips. They had a child, William Lindsey Phillips. Supposedly, his name was changed from Lindsey to Phillips, in Montgomery Co., GA, December 23, 1839. If this is true, he would have been born before 1840 and continued to use Lindsey after the name change. The source that was referenced is Names Changed Legally in Georgia 1800-1856. I have not been able to find a copy of this book at the DAR. I have been able to verify in census records that for many years, Mary Lindsey lived close to Royal Budd Phillips and there is no evidence that she ever married. If any of this matches your history, I'd love to exchange more information with you. If it doesn't match, but you have an idea of where I should look next, please let me know. Denise L.
