I have been trying to find when and where James Liddell (b1712) landed in America. Going through old passenger lists, land records, etc has yielded the following spellings: Liddell, Liddle, Lidle, Liddel, Lidell, Liddal, Liddall, Lidden, Liddill, Luddel, Lyddal, Lyddale, Lyddall, Lydol, Lydle, Lydel, Laddell...I could go on, but you get the idea. Some of these are distinct families that may or may not be related to Liddell, some are just phonetic interpretations by the person writing the document, some are interpretations of those trying to read bad or faded handwriting on old documents, and some are just mistakes. And who knows how many times Little was written down for Liddell. It seems the farther you go back in time, the more variations there are.
