In regards to you mentioning the LIDDELL being of Scots origin is pronounced as rhyming with FIDDLE and English origin if rhyming with BELL, I can tell you that it doesn't really help much. Case in point: My search so far has taken be up as far as Durham area in the late 1500's/early 1600's. The name was spelled in all different manners including LIDDELL and LIDDLE. My great grandfather William used LIDDELL (Bell) as did one of his four brothers, whereas his other two brothers used LIDDLE (Fiddle). This was all in the same family. Their father however used LIDDELL on all his documents I have so far found. I understand from family tradition that it was of Scots origin. So far as I said, I have gotten as far north as the Durham area and still have yet to cross over into Scotland. Just wanted to throw that into the brew! Sandy
