This is a forwarded message. Please reply to the list or to Jim Liddell. Thanks, Nancy, List Admin. A research team of family genealogists was formed in Februrary of this year (2004) to assist individuals with lines connected to any of 40 or more related surnames which probably are derived from the Scottish placename Liddesdale. These surnames include Liddell, Lydell, Lidel, Liddel, Liddle, Littell, Lydal and so forth. The reader of this message can probably figure out the other variant spellings not listed here. This team currently uses the name Team Liddell simply because the vast majority of its members are of the various Liddell lines but the team fully supports and assists those with the assumedly related surnames. The two primary objectives of the team are to assist those still tracing back to Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England and those who have already accomplished this and who are now exploring the "ultimate origins" of their lines. The team believes that all of these surname groups are related in their DNA/mtDNA even if the document trail can't prove it. While still in its fifth month of existance, the team already had members in seven nations worldwide and some 15 American states, has established a Yahoo Group site which is closed to the public but which serves its members as a common filing cabinet, reference library and archives for its members to upload their line-charts, essays on their families and related material of general interest to all members. There are plans for a DNA/mtDNA study in perhaps a year and the erection of a limited-purpose more public website in addition to the Group site. An international in-gathering of the surnames has been discussed as well. Every intention is held for this to be a permanent community of related surnames. There are no dues or assessment and no formal organization. The team goes to great lengths to ensure complete privacy to its members and the non-disclosure of their email addresses and details of their private lives. All work is voluntary but generously acknowledged and recognized team-wide. If you are interested in joining on a trial basis with the assurance that you can remain simply an observer if you so desire, please provide: (1) your proper name and nickname, (2) your state or province of residence, ((3) your personal estimation of the size of your files (Average, Large or Vast--we don't force our members to admit they have only a few scraps), (4) whether or not you are interested without obligation in participating in the DNA/mtDNA study (the estiamted cost is under $175), (5) your primary research interest area and (6) if not bearing one of the Liddesdale-variant surnames, a brief description of how your lines link most closely to one of these. Email this to [email protected] and expect a reply within 48 hours. Thanks. Jim Liddell

The first two links are to pages that are informative and very well done. The third link is a great find, if any of your ancestors happened to belong to a Primitive Baptist Church. Not all states are online, but the ones that are have a lot of detailed information. I found an entire extended family of one of my Illinois lines there! I hope they're helpful to some of you. For those who may have an interest, this is from Pat Connors, who hosts the Ireland-Trivia list. Nancy I have a new list that some may be interested in: Irish-In-UK It is a discussion list for those who are interested in the Irish migration to the UK (includes England, Wales, Scotland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands). It will include genealogy, history, culture etc and for those that settled in the UK and those that may have stayed there a while, or a generation or so, before moving on to the US, AU, South Africa or other areas of the world. If you would like to join, you can do so at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ethnic-Irish/IRISH-IN-UK.html I haven't gotten around to making a website for the list, yet, but hope to do so this weekend. Also, if you can pass the word on that this list has started, I would appreciate it. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

That's the first time I've seen anyone reading LDS records showing James/1712 dead at 2 or 3. Well, if correct that just confirms that James Tompson Liddell and his daughter used LDS records and not any public records to write their opus. I don't think they used ANY actual records other than just what people told them and in the doing not mentioning kin they didn't like in that family and so forth. I know that this happened with my own family--nearly everyone born to a second wife after the first one died were left out by a wife of the first set of Liddell brothers. And from what I picked up on over the weekend, the very same thing is happening again some 50 years later. I sure wish "genealogists" would check with more than one source when they are using nothing but family records and not at all consulting the public ones. The location you cite doesn't surprise me. I've seen this before but never traced it out on a map. I do know there were some related Liddells on the south back of the Forth of Firth about then. And if you trace THAT out on a map, it is about 1.5-days' ride north of Liddesdale on the old "Low Road". --Remember that song: "Oh, you take the Low Road and I'll take the High Road and I'll be in Scotland before ye..."? Well, Airth is less than a day's ride from the Liddells I mentioned about on the F of F. (Scotland is such a tiny place. Total distance from Liddesdale to Airth was probably about 80 miles--a bit more than two-days' ride, I would guess.)

I'll repeat for all. I also saw the father of James 1712 listed as John and mother Janet Smith. Later I rechecked it and the James 1712 referred to died at age 2 or 3 years. If correct it is obviously not our "James 1712". Have not checked recently. Airth is located due east of Glasgow, far from the borderlands.

I love your play on that old subject line, Dale. Well, of course, this is more the sport of Gary Liddell and Ron Liddell, but it sure looks impressive to me, there, old buddy! I made contact with the Jackson MS Liddells again yesterday and spent a fortune in phone calls talking to them. This John Liddell is their line as I understand it.But they are just like the rest of us--you put a bunch of Liddells in the same room and close the door on them and then go back a half-hour later? You will find that they have chosen up sides and are lined on both sides of the room shouting at each other over whether or not Aunt Callie was a Smith or a Rakestraw before she married Bill Liddell back in 1875 in Roanoke. The smoke will come boiling out of that room, I promise. There might even be a body or two lying on the floor if you wait past the half-hour before openng that door. But in any case, they will then all come out of that room, laugh a little and go off and have coffee and cake together as if they were just as civilized as the rest of humanity. What a bunch I belong to. (Love every one of them, too!) Jim

If you have submitted a family tree to Ancestry.com, you should know of the change about to be implemented by them. The Family Trees that have been donated to Ancestry for free distribution to other researchers are about to be sold by subscription: the OneWorldTree Preview cost will be $49.95 for 14 months. If you'd prefer that your information was not sold, there is a link below which will take you to a set of instructions on opting out by deleting your tree. After clicking on the link and arriving at the page, click on "What's a preview?" near the top of the page. Read thoroughly and then click on "View our checklist" (which appears on #3). Among other things, you will see the following sentence: "If for any reason you do not want your tree to be part of the new OneWorldTree service, you must delete it from the Ancestry World Tree database by tentatively May 21, 2004." This is the link: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/trees/owt/ Since this will be of no interest to the folks on the list who don't have trees at Ancestry, please direct any discussion or questions to me at: [email protected] Nancy, List Admin. BURIED VETERANS' RECORDS NOW AVAILABLE ON WEB By Suzanne Gamboa The Associated Press WASHINGTON - VA has made it easier and faster for the public to get answers about family history, old war buddies or famous war heroes. The agency put on the Web 3.2 million records for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. The VA's Nationwide Gravesite Locator, at http://www.cem.va.gov, also has records for some state veterans cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999. Joe Nosari, VA's deputy chief information officer for Memorial Affairs, said the records used to be on paper and microfilm. Private companies have put some of the information online and charged for it, but the VA information is free, he said. The VA's gravesite navigator includes names, dates of birth and death, military service dates, service branch and rank if known, cemetery information and grave location in the cemetery. The VA will withhold some information, such as next of kin, for privacy purposes. The site will be updated daily. Annually, about 80,000 veterans are buried at national cemeteries. The VA also hopes to add records for veterans whose families requested grave markers from the VA. Those markers may go to private cemeteries or cemeteries overseas. --- On the Net: VA Nationwide Gravesite Locator: http://www.cem.va.gov AP-WS-04-12-04 1916EDT
Most of you are familiar with the UK Census Project, but I notice that many more transcriptions have been added lately. The link at the bottom is to a page with a tool called a Family Data Sheet Estimator. It's based on mathematical models of genealogical records dating back to 1400. These are just estimates and things 'out of the norm' will throw it off. For instance, I was born late in my parents' lives, so when I did a make-up on my mother, her 'first child estimated date' was 16 years before my actual birth; but it was almost scary to see how close it came to my parents' other info and on back to previous generations! Marrying to get there? Either that or escaping the religious turmult associated with Scotland at several times. Right now, I'm flat of my back because of this nearly four-day-long nonservice by Yahoo for half or more of each day. Don't know what is happening, luckily I have downloaded nearly all my files there. They reported are profitable, so??? PLEASE GO LOOK AT the Scotland article in the 1911Encylopedia posting. A good site to get to this is www.landmark-project.com. This is the Encylopedia Britannica--and the 1991 edition is supposed to be the best encyl ever produced. The Scotland article is nearly 40 small-type pages long but if you will pick up about where Wm de Soulis come back to Scotland in a "filibustering raid" and read forward, you will see his allies, John Baliol, what happened and then the religious war that followed. They almost won but didn't and a group of Presbyterians on the losing side had to flee to Ulster. They then returned during the time of Bonnie Prince C and lost again and had to flee again. There is also a huge history of how the Presby Church literally left the Catholic, even claimed the Keys to the Kingdom. That one article contains nearly everything we need to explain what happened to the Liddells and the beginning of a link up with the de Soulis family. Sorry for writing you here but I can't get into Yahoo for email for the second day in a row. Jim Liddell
