I believe my mom has all of this and possibly more. I can talk with and see what she does have on Allens. I had found some of the web sites that you indicated, but some of them I have not been to as of yet. Thanks. I don't know if you had gone to the Lidell reunion at Schuyler Lake or not, but my mom was there and had met Kathy Lidell, plus she has met Jana too. I will let you know what my mom has in her records as soon as I can talk with her and show her what you have. Thanks a lot. Missy

    3. Hi All If this location doesn't work out try Bowness near Lake Windermere ..... In the mid 1800's movement in the UK was at its height .... since the majority of the working class didn't own their own property nor did they have much furniture or personal effects they used to move sometimes overnight when the chance of new better well paid work was available or work became scarce. Transportation was quite good and cheap so people would move substantial distances ...... There are migration maps available showing generalised movement with dates. ALSO remember that people used to say the first place they could remember as a child as their place of birth especially on Census's, so take EVERYTHING with a pinch of salt even statutory certificates !! If it is scotland he was born then civil marriage certificates are a boon .... giving both the bride and grooms mothers maiden names and the parents date and place of marriage. 3. Hello Claire, I went to GENUKI and found the following regarding Bo'ness and Linlithgowshire (West Lothian). It seems to me that if he was Christened/Born in Bo'ness in 1845 and then in 1881 is showing up in Edinburgh it very well may be the fellow. As it shows here Edinburgh is only 24 miles away. Probably went there for work or something. I don't think though that Edinburgh and Bo'ness would be considered the same. Edinburgh is in a different shire/county...."Midlothian" Civil Registration in Scotland is from 1855 and records are from the GRO in Edinburgh. I would suggest renting the Parish register for Bo'ness in West Lothian and look there. If there is an LDS Family History Library near you, you can get the register films through them. It doesn't cost but a couple of dollars. I hope this helps some. Do you know who (aside from the names you were able to find in the Batch Files) his siblings were or who he married? This is the address where I got the info: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/WLN/index.html#Towns Borrowstounness or Bo'ness, a town and a parish of NW Linlithgowshire (West Lothian). 3. Hello Claire, I looked at the entry from the IGI you mention below in your post and confirm the same with the exception that the surname is spelled LIDDLE, which matters not. There is also one listed for a John LIDDELL b. 21 June 1845 to James LIDDELL and Jane BURNS. Both of these entries appear to be from the filming of the records and not from a church member so can be relied on more. The first, the one you believe may be your ancestor is what I will talk about. The area of Bo'ness is in West Lothian. I checked the Batch file number and then searched on the marriage for a Robert LIDDELL and Agnes. I found it listed for 26 Oct 1841 also in Bo'ness, West Lothian. I did not go to check on any other listings for other children of Robert and Agnes in that parish. How to confirm they are the right folks, remains to be seen and would be helped along if you happen to know the names of any of the siblings of John that you could check against. You said it..... "certainly does fit what knowledge I have of my LIDDELL line"....... You did not mention what that knowledge is. But armed with your knowledge and the Batch file numbers you can perhaps ascertain if this is the correct ancestry. Since the birth is in 1845 there should be a regular record available which you can order. But before you do that try to make sure this is the correct person's record you want as it is quite pricey. I have used the Batch files along with the parish records with good luck! The birth/christening batch file number for Bo'ness is C116637 and the marriage batch file number is M116637. By using the number you can search in the IGI with just the surname and the Batch number and what will come up will be all records for all of that surname in that parish. Then you can look at those and see if there are other children etc....... Hope this helps, All the best luck, Sandy At 05:15 AM 08/10/2004 -0600, you wrote: >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Message Board Post: > >Good Morning All..... > >My LIDDELL line is proving hard to trace just simply because I am unfamiliar with successful Scottish research at the moment > >I have found an entry on the IGI for a John LIDDELL born 22 Mar 1845 in Bo'ness, Scotland to a Robert LIDDELL & Agnes WADDELL. My sister had wrote a post as well on here, which I had not even realized, but this is it: Hello everyone, I posted this once before in a different way. Now that I see somewhat how the list works I wanted to refraise my inquiry. Does anyone know where or how I would begin to search the area of Longeaton, Derbyshire records (parish, census, church)? I really don't know where to begin. I am new to genealogy and am starting with the hardest lost link (I'm determined to find his home!). I am searching for William LIDELL (could have different spellings) who came to US around 1780 with Major John TUNNICLIFF (father was John Tunnicliff who was first settler of Town of Exeter, NY also from Longeaton, Derbyshire). William LIDELL b. 1752. William and most of his family is also missing from Otsego Co. NY census records in 1810 and 1820 and died before the 1830 census. Wondering if possibly he went back to England during that time? If anyone would be willing to point me in the right direction or do some looking up for me I would appreciate it. I would like to find William Lidell's birth, family in England, home). It may be possible that the library here has some records I could research if I just knew where to get started. Other links I'm researching are: BILL - wife of William LIDELL m. 1792 was Asenath BILL b. 1772 d. 1859 Asenath BILL's father was Daniel BILL b. 1744 in Conn. children: LIDELL Simeon Asenath Luther Allen Orilla (Aurilea) Jonas ALLEN - mother of Asenath BILL was Sarah ALLEN (kin to Ethan Allen) All settled in the Otsego Co./Schuyler Lake area upstate New York. Thanks for your help in advance. Heather Barber I do not have much of the information myself, but my mother has been researching Lidells for years and she has actually been to Schuyler Lake and has a lot of information from Mr. Stoltenberg (can't remember for sure his spelling) and kin who lives and/or lived there. Please let me know if you would be interested in any of this information or may have any that may be use to my family. Thank you very much. Missy

I'm afraid that the surnames you list are not too well documented back past the g-gfather stage. We have some of the families bearing these surnames among our members in those states and of their descendants elsewhere in the nation, but even they are having problems in linking up since we are still a young organization. Some of the issues are: A number of their ancestors entered the USA from Canada, others through NYC and there were Old World departures from Northern Ireland, Scotland and England. Compounding the problem for those arriving prior to 1750 or so is the great conflict-destruction of records in the 1600s and earlier in Scotland itself. Team Liddell, which is at the most fundamental level is planning an ALL-SURNAMES (which are derived from the old Liddesdale Scotland border district) DNA study starting in June 2005, does try to help out individuals such as yourself by collecting up brief line charts from each family in hopes that if enough are posted to our common files that some linkages will begin to appear. 3. Hi everyone, I've finally launched a project that's long been on my mind. The link between Carolina Scots (usually, but not always, having immigrated from the Scottish Highlands) and Mississippi Scots has intrigued me since I started doing family research. It was typically the children of the original immigrants who started migrating westward, some making stops in Georgia and Alabama, but eventually settling in Mississippi. Eventually, Scots from all over the Carolinas had made their way to Mississippi! I've started a Rootsweb mailing list called MS-SCOTS, for people with an interest in Scottish immigrants or their descendants, who migrated to MS between 1800-1900 (approximately). If you'd like to subscribe, send mail to MS- [email protected] with the single word subscribe in the message body. To join MS-SCOTS-D (the digest version), do the same thing with the address [email protected] Please feel free to forward this to anyone who may be interested! It's my hope that researchers who have missing branches on their Scottish family trees and/or ancestors with missing time periods, will benefit from exchanging with other researchers who have a similar interest.
