    1. [LIDDELL] Records of Castle Garden
    2. Nancy
    3. Castle Garden was America's first official immigration center. The site, Castle Garden.org, hosts a database of info on 10 million immigrants, from 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened, and will eventually complete the digitization of the remaining 2 million records, beginning in 1820, from the original ship manifests. Information includes: First name, Last name, Occupation, Age, Sex, Date Arrived, Origin of Ship There are 112 Liddell records on the site. http://www.castlegarden.org/ Nancy Nancy www.thepastwhispers.com

    1. [LIDDELL] Migration for Liddell has taken place
    2. Nancy
    3. Hi everyone, The Rootsweb Liddell list has been migrated to the new server. A reminder that the address you'll use to post will no longer be [email protected] Instead it will be [email protected] with no "L." If you use AOL, you may want to check your spam folders to make sure no Rootsweb messages are being diverted. A reminder: the link to the AOL Rootsweb list, where various AOL problems are discussed is: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/AOLers-RootsWeb.html If you have any problems or questions, please let me know. 1. Update on List Migration
    2. Nancy
    3. Everyone, The Rootsweb list migration is proceeding, albeit somewhat slowly and a bit behind schedule. I administrate twenty lists and, so far, only my A - C lists have changed over. I'm getting a better understanding of the new system and there are a few things that you'll need to know about. First, after your list has migrated, the address you'll use to post will no longer be, for example, [email protected] Instead it will be [email protected] with no "L." I'll let you know when the move has been accomplished because, although Rootsweb is supposed to be sending out "Welcome" letters to subscribers as the lists are changed, not everyone is receiving them. For those of you who crosspost, you will no longer be able to use the "BCC" function when sending messages to Rootsweb; however, you may still send posts to more than one list by using either "To" or "CC" with no difficulty. Some of you subscribe to BOTH the individual and digest mode of the same list, with Mailman, this will no longer be possible; you'll need to choose one or the other. The system will automatically choose one for you, if you'd prefer the other, just let me know and I'll fix that for you. AOL is presenting some problems. If you use AOL, you'll need to check your spam folders to make sure no messages are being diverted. Also, for AOL users, the format of your digest messages may change, if you prefer the former format, just let me know and I can adjust it. Rootsweb is working diligently with AOL to try to get issues worked out as they develop. Some of you may not be aware of this, but AOL Rootsweb subscribers have their own list, where various problems are discussed and you may find answers to questions, not only about this, but other AOL difficulties pertaining to mailing lists: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/AOLers-RootsWeb.html I am trying to keep my own posts on this subject down to a minimum and, IF all goes smoothly, the only other post you will receive from me will be one that advises that the move of a particular list has been accomplished, so you'll know when to begin using the new address. For the BALDRIDGE, CARMICHAEL, CATES and CAPE FEAR SCOTS list members among you, be advised that those lists have been moved. From now on, I will only send posts to specific lists as they migrate. Let me know if you experience any problems. Nancy Nancy, www.thepastwhispers.com

    3. As some of you may be aware, Rootsweb's mailing lists are about to be moved to a new list management system (Mailman). I've been keeping track of the possible problems this change may create through the List-Owner and List-Update mailing lists for the past several days. So far, I don't see any evidence that the switch will be problematic for subscribers. If all goes as planned, you won't notice any changes in the lists to which you are currently subscribed. I've, also, been studying the Mailman tutorial for administrators in advance of the move, so that I can be better prepared to do the change-over tasks required of admins once the change is in effect. (On that score, I make no promises...the only thing I'm certain of, so far, is that I'm going to need a new supply of aspirin...which I've already secured. :-) I can, however, promise, to do my best to make the change as problem-free as possible for you. Some of you may have seen the announcement about the move on the Helpdesk page, which includes mention of the "List-Update" list, the list set up specifically to deal with questions concerning the list migration. It's my view, after observing discussions on the list for awhile, that it may create more confusion than answers for many people. Also, as you might imagine, it's an extremely active list at the moment---with a flood of worried queries from my fellow list admins, who, like me, are a bit concerned about their ability to muddle through the tutorial, and the questions that arise, as they study it. However, if you're interested in subscribing, you might take a quick look at the archives to help you decide: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/LIST-UPDATE/2006-08 The first lists are set to be moved on Thursday, August 17th. You'll find the schedule for switching the lists at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html If problems do arise during the change-over, please know that the Rootsweb staff and the list admins will be working to resolve them as quickly as possible. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. If I don't know the answer, I'll find someone who does! Nancy Nancy, www.thepastwhispers.com

    3. Dear Andrew, Many thanks for answering my email. These Liddells are proving hard to sort out. I am c.c.ing this email to my cousin Colin who has had DNA testing done to link him (us) into the James Liddell line but we think James Donaldson Liddell may be a different line. I was hoping by throwing it out into the arena that we might eventually sort something out and I think it is a good thing to pool our knowledge - who knows, we may yet sort them out. I guess you might have been very hopeful when you saw the name Henderson which was linked into your Liddell line with Marion but I am sorry to disappoint you as you can see I have married a Henderson and the Liddell line comes down through my maternal grandmother. We will keep your details on file just in case there is a break through. 2. Colin Liddell
    3. Hi Andrew, I have a feeling we have made contact before, is this correct? James Donaldson Liddell has been extensively researched by his gg grandson Ray Liddell who lives in New Zealand, are you aware of this chap and do you know him? James Donaldson Liddell was born in Alloa I believe in either 1808 or 1807, our James Liddell, my gg grandfather was born in Alva in 1808 and his father was shown in the Alva Church Register as James Liddle and the mother was Isabella/Isabel Drysdale. At this stage we have no idea what happened to James Liddle the father or where he came from, I suspect he is related to James Donaldson Liddell but, no proof! Isabella/Isabel Drysdale and her son James Liddell came out to Australia in the 1820s, no firm date here just a family letter that stated that Grandmother Liddell came out to Australia in the 1820s. Some of her siblings also came out but I am not sure they all came out at the same time. An interesting item surfaced in my research and that was the fact that Isabella was a partner with James Donaldson Liddell in owning a ship. This to me indicates that there has to be some sort of familial connection between the two families, it is too much to be a coincidence. Our James died on the Araluen goldfields at Braidwood, NSW in 1860, his mother Isabella/Isabel had already died in Sydney in 1845. It is a shame you are not a Liddell, we have been trying to get one of the James Donaldson Liddell descendants to have his DNA tested to see if there is a match between the two families, so far no luck.{;-( It would help no end to narrow down our research to find where our James Liddle was born and died if there was a proven connection between the two families. Do you know of any Liddell male descendants of James Donaldson Liddell who would be prepared to have a DNA test to see if there is a connection? Regards, Colin Liddell in a cool Brisbane. ----- Original Message ----- From: andrew To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, January 01, 2003 2:23 AM Subject: Re: [LIDDELL] Re: Liddells in Tasmania Hi June , My name is Andrew Buttfield and I have been researching my mother's family of Liddell's who we believe came from the Stirling area of Scotland , I will look into our reams of names etc to see if there is a connection , our James had a brother named John , not that it was an uncommon chritian name of the times . We are descended from a James Donaldson Liddell who married in 1828 1830 in Sydney to Abigail Desmond { a convict }. Do you know if you are connected to him ? James had a brother who remained in Scotland who married a Marion Henderson is that a connection ?. 1. James LIDDELL from Glasgow
    2. B & S Murray
    3. Hi, I'm trying to trace a James Liddell b 1 Mar 1803 in Glasgow, Scotland. He married Esther Mills/Miles on 22 May 1825 in Barony, Lanark, Scotland, and had at least 2 children: James b 30 Mar 1830 in Glasgow and Elisabeth b 1834. I quite sure James' parents were James Liddell and Elizabeth Graham, who married 30 Dec 1796 at Glasgow. I only know of the one child they had, James b 1803, but am sure there were many more. If anyone could provide information I would be pleased to share. Thanks, Sandy in Brisbane, Australia

    1. Today is not just Tuesday - OT
    2. Nancy
    3. Everyone, I hope you'll forgive this off-topic post, but I'm so proud of the irrepressible will and spirit of my hometown, in the face of such overwhelming hardships, that it proved too much to resist asking you to join me in celebrating today in New Orleans...where it's not just Tuesday, it's Mardi Gras! And where the people of the city, as well as the people of the MS and LA Gulf Coast, are surely blessed with their ancestors' fortitude and faith. It's, also, an opportunity to remind you to make copies of all of your genealogy work and keep them in a safe place, preferably with a third set going to a friend or relative's home. This area had over 300 years of rich history and no one can even imagine how much of it, in the form of genealogical work, was lost in the flooding. My new mantra is: make copies, make copies, make copies! But, for today, forget your cares (and your brick walls) and "come to the Mardi Gras, cher...and pass a good time." http://www.thepastwhispers.com/Mardi_Gras.html Nancy "Ask anyone picking through the mold and wreckage of their home: Why are you doing this? Why not just turn your back and walk away? 'I'm trying to save what I can,' they answer, as they search for their most precious treasures: the photo albums, g-grandmother's tea cups, mementoes that remind them of who they are. Like individual 'treasures,' Mardi Gras is a collective treasure worth saving. It is part of our past and what makes us who we are."

    3. Everyone, This is the first chance I've had to contact my lists. I have been off-line for a week and will be unable to get to the computer on a regular basis for awhile longer. If you've written and received no response, please excuse my tardiness in replying, and know that I will answer at the very first opportunity. The eye of Hurricane Katrina passed directly over us and we have been without electric power ever since. We now have a generator and it's enough for two electric fans and, as I've just discovered, my laptop computer. Phone service, needed for me to be on-line, has just been partially restored, but it is still sporadic. We had sustained winds of 150 mph; we lost 42 trees and our fence, but we are among the very fortunate, the house suffered only minor roof damage. Other places have fared far worse than our area. There is much devastation in South Louisiana and South Mississippi. Please hold the victims of this terrible storm in your thoughts. If you need my assistance, let me know and I will reply just as soon as I can. Please forgive cross-posts. Nancy Nancy, visit the family: My G-Grandfather's Attic www.geocities.com/twincousin2334
