Hi Barbara, This James Liddell isn't one of mine (so far).? I bought an old whisky flagon, probably dating to around 1870 - 1890, from a local auction house.? It is typically Scottish with a "treacle-glazed" collar with the words "James Liddell Wine Merchant Crossburnhouse Slamannan" impressed into it.? It was made in Glasgow by Grosvenor Pottery, Bridgeton. My Liddells came from Polmont and Muiravonside in Stirlingshire, along the south shore of the river Forth.? Slamannan isn't a million miles away.? Plus, my gt-gt-grandfather, James Liddell, had a brother John who was a Wine and Spirit Merchant in Springburn district of Glasgow. He died in 1873 (Cause of death was "paralysis through drink").? This James may?have been his son/nephew/cousin but can't find any connection as yet. If anyone would like a photograph of this flagon please get in touch. My gt-gt-grandfather married Barbara Paterson, so there are lots of Barbara Liddells in our family! Hello again Liddell family, I am looking for information about the parents and siblings of my g.g. grandfather, John Liddell. John was my father's mother's father's father. My father's mother's father was James Liddell, and my father's mother was Margaret Liddell. Margaret was born in Ontario, and her father, James, was born in Banff, Banffshire. According to the little bit of information that I have been able to obtain so far, John was born about 1800 in Kirkwall and married Mary Dick about 1831. He was a "mariner" and he and Mary settled in Banff and had at least nine children there, one of whom was my g. grandfather, James. The spelling of the last name has varied over time. I have seen it spelled "Liddell", "Liddel", and "Liddle". My father's mother and her parents spelled the name "Liddell". Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I would be happy to reciprocate as I am able. Thanks, Richard Davison
Hi Pat, Sorry about the double up in the message but thank you so much for the information that you have been able to find. I will certainly try and track Malcolm Liddell for the information that he has. Unfortunately my Dad died in 1985 which was before I was interested in family history so I feel I am flying blind with a lot of this. I will look forward to hearing further from you and I wonder where you fit in this picture !! Kind regards and thanks again. Margaret Liddell

Hello Margaret yes got both your messages last night - we were out so didn't answer. Andrew Liddell according to this paper which I will send was the son of John Docherty and Helen Liddell - he took Helen's surname - you can read all that in the paper but you need fairly strong glasses. Ada Jane was married to another person first and came by the surname Staples through her first marriage. This paper was prepared by Malcolm Liddell in Sept 06 - he gives his address as 75 Eglinton Rd Dunedin so you may be able to contact him for more information. happy hunting Pat Liddell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Margaret" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 30, 2007 6:47 PM Subject: Re: [LIDDELL] ANDREW LIDDELL > Hi Pat,, > Thank you for replying regarding Andrew Liddell. Hello again, Not sure if my previous message went through but anyway thank you for replying to me regarding Andrew Liddell and Ada Staples. You could tryh scanning this through to me but I do have info on the family of Ada and Andrew but nothing on Andrew's parents or his brothers or sisters. If this doesn't come through then my address is Margaret Liddell, Flat 2, 11 McBeath Avenue, Hoon Hay, Christchurch, New Zealand. I do appreciate your help with this one as it has been a bit hard finding the information. I guess I might have to get a copy of their Marriage Certificate which took place in Christchurch, to hopefully get the information I need. Once again thank you very much. Kind regards Margaret Liddell
Hi Pat,, Thank you for replying regarding Andrew Liddell. If the paperwork you have just shows the family of Andrew and Ada, then I probably have this one but I do not have any info regarding Andrews parents, or any brothers or sisters that he may have had. I know he was married in NZ and it may be that I will have to send for a copy of his marriage cert to follow up on this information. However, if you have any different information then I would be most grateful to receive this from you. You could try scanning or else my postal address is : Margaret Liddell, F2, 11 McBeath Avenue, Hoon Hay, Christchurch, New Zealand. Thank you for taking the time to reply. KInd regards. Margaret
I have an A4 document titled Liddell Family Tree with mentions Ada Jane Staples and Andrew Liddell. I don't know how I came by but I could try scanning it and sending to you if you like. It is quite small writing - if the scan doesn't work I could mail a copy to you regards Pat Liddell Paremata 042330262 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Margaret" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 30, 2007 1:16 AM Subject: [LIDDELL] ANDREW LIDDELL > Hi > Can anyone help me with the parentage of Andrew Liddell born 1842 Paisley, > Scotland and who married Ada Jane Staples in New Zealand. > Andrew died in Winton, Southland, New Zealand in 1942.
