    3. Little must have 50 different variations :) I have poured over the maps from the National Library of Scotland recently (1500-1700's) and have also read several old, old books from the area of Eskedale, Ewesdale, Liddesdale, Dumfries, etc........ and I now think that the Little surname was not a variation of Liddel....I now believe they were two very different families...of course, there is always room for phonetic "circumstances" on occasion. Absolutely, there is probably not a single surname known today that hasn't undergone drastic changes over the centuries. I'm certainly not a professional, but that is the sense I get from some additional research. I could look at those maps all day and see new things of interest. They make your eyes buggy, but they are soooooo interesting!! The care and artistry of the maps is wonderful. 3. Dear Jeanne It's entirely possible that the names of Little and Liddell (and its variations) are part of the same family. Have a look at the Team Liddell site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~teamliddell/index.htm there hasn't been much activity lately - the main moderator James Liddell has been very quiet in the past few years, but it does have a lot of information. My surname research is LITTLE It seems to me that Liddel Waters (river) in Scotland is such a close match phonetically to Little that it is a good possibility that they are variations of the same name. Does anyone know if this has been proven? Did it occur in a certain period of history? Is there any good research done on this? If anyone is interested and does not know this already, the National Library of Scotland site (nls.com) has a "Maps" section with all sorts of old maps available for anyone to look at......literally tons of them for the Borders region......Roxburghshire is where I was looking in particularly. Also there are Roy's Military maps; harder to look at but extremely detailed......all from the 1600-1700 range. Worth a look at the site if you've not done so previously.
