My fondest desire is to find the ancestors of "Planter" John Lewis, b. circa 1720 in Virginia, d. 1800 in Albemarle County, VA. He is referred to as Planter John because his will begins, "I, John Lewis, Planter of Albemarle County, VA..." Any help would be greatly appreciated and the best Christmas gift ever. My sister and I have researched this line for about 30 years and our cousin for many years before that. I am beginning to think he was in the witness protection program. There were so many John Lewises in that area during that time frame, but none of them check all the boxes. Merry Christmas everybody! Happy Christmas Katie and to everyone! Yes there seems to have been a dearth of given names in the 17th and 18th Centuries. The John Lewises and Thomas Lewises are replete. It's so difficult to tease them out on the UK side of the Atlantic. Even going to England and viewing the records themselves (what a blast to hold a 400 year old parchment!), it is difficult and sometimes impossible to correlate the individuals there with our earliest ancestors in North America. The subsequent myth of Lewis Welsh origins helps to obscure our more varied birth places for our earliest Lewis ancestors, many of whom were born in England, Scotland and Ireland, even though they themselves may have had Welsh ancestors that we can't see. Those of us with documented deep Lewis ancestry are fortunate indeed. If I have observed a pattern, it is that the earliest Lewises (1600s) came from East Anglia, then from Yorkshire and Lincoln (early 1700s) and then from Wales (late 1700s to 1800s). Many of the 1600s Lewises had their surname recorded as "Lewes," though spelling of surnames was not standardized until the mid-1700s. As more documents become available online, perhaps we'll come across the definitive documents for Planter John of Virginia and Edmond Lewes of Lynn, Massachusetts. Until then we can enjoy our Celtic heritage and celebrate Christmas in the grand tradition.
