He is married to Matilda, the oldest child of Wm. & Jane Wood. Matilda was born in Tennessee in about 1814. They have a three year old boy named William, born in Missouri. They arrived in Arkansas about 1846 from Missouri. His father and brother are blacksmiths. Daniel Lewis was a wagon maker, as are several other neighbors. There were harness makers and gear makers in the area as well. Wiley is twelve in 1850. He is a literate young man and starts to work earning income to assist his dear mother Jane. He visits with Mr. Lewis just down the road and is hired. Wiley will be taught carpentry and wagon building by Daniel Lewis, his uncle by marriage. Wiley will become an accomplished carpenter and a 'wheelwright.' Matilda and Daniel have five children: William L. Lewis (b 1847 MO), Jasper N. Lewis (b 3 Aug 1850 AR), Lawrence Lewis (b 1854 AR), Lavina, (Lorena) (b 1855 AR), Mary A. Lewis (b 1860 AR). In an 1870 Census, Jefferson Co. MO, we find Matilda Lewis, age 54, with the following children still at home with her: William L. Lewis, age 23, Jasper N. Lewis, age 19, Lawrence Lewis, age 16, and Mary A. Lewis, age 10. She and or Daniel had moved back to Missouri. I don't know what happened to Daniel." 1850 Census: Prairie, Washington, Arkansas; Roll: M432_31; Page: 394; Image: 192.
