I've done what you are doing and it isn't easy but it is possible to succeed. I found a post you had made on a people-search forum looking for Joel. I also see that you believe that there was a potential link to a John Laws of New Bern. What leads you to believe he is dead? You may want to try and get an obituary for John that would list next of kin and attempt to contact them for information. If he was a former trooper, there may be an organization related to law enforcement in or near New Bern that can help you get information on John. Researching his mothers family to see if there are any of the Laws family left in Craven County, NC that may know something may be your best bet. Your husband doesn't have any elderly aunts or uncles that may know anything of this Betty? Have you tried the Veterans Administration or anything?
