She and my ggfather, Robert N Lewis were married 28 Jul 1844 in Obion County, TN. In 1846, they rafted the rather short distance downriver from Hickman County, KY to the New Madrid Bend area of what is now Lake County, TN. It is interesting to note that this area in Nortwest TN, and Southwest KY is also where the infamous tragedy of "Jefferson's Nephews", Lilburn and Isham Lewis occured--the area where the tragic earthquakes of Dec, Jan, & Feb 1811-1812 re-routed the Mississippi River and formed Reelfoot Lake. It was also the area where Meriweather Lewis was appointed by Jefferson as Governor after the Louisiana Purchase. (My earliest childhood memories are of my spending time at my relatives' homes near Reelfoot Lake.) My ggfather was known as "Major Bob" to all who knew him, and so many did, having done business where some of his children lived in Lewis Prairie near New Madrid, MO and New Orleans as well as TN & KY. When he died in 1859, the administrator of his estate sold over 1000 books from his library. (Don't I wish I could have seen them!) In 1828, he was appointed Constable of Henry County, TN; was the first postmaster of Clinton, KY, served 4 terms in the KY General Assembly, and was a member of the County Court and County Supervisors in Hickman County, KY. My aunt Onie who was the family historian stated that Robert N Lewis, my ggfather, first married a Jane Meriweather (perhaps a widow) and that their children were Alexander L Lewis, John N Lewis, Charles Lewis, Col Robert Andrew Lewis, Randolph Leonidas Lewis and George Lewis. My cousin, Genevieve, wrote decades ago after researching all our living relatives at the time that " Robert N Lewis, Jr, my grandfather (that is to say my great uncle)was the last child of" the aforementioned' "Col. Robert N Lewis". Please excuse this lengthy and detailed message. I apologize to you and to all who may read it, but I wanted to include some extent of detail in hopes that something might ring true with some of their family history and we could make a connection. Thanks for your time. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
