I'm not sure which base he was at. I probably could find out. He suffered from the injuries you descibed. Plus ringing in the ears and finger joints crippled. I know he served under Patton. I'm having a hard time remembering the story off hand. He either was on a half-track or as a foot soldier when he was hit. I think it was the bridge of Normnay.
