He told us that HIS great-grandfather was Wild Bill Lewis, a full-blooded Cherokee. He evidently disappeared on the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma, leaving his wife behind who (he said) was half-blooded & allowed to remain. She waited eight years for him to return, then remarried. I don't have her name, or her new husband's name, but it sounds like this may be a match to what you described. Her son (my grandfather's grandfather - might be your John Smith Lewis?) later went to Oklahoma & back by wagon. Maybe looking for Wild Bill? My great-grandfather's name was Aris Truit Lewis..maybe he's a son of John Smith Lewis?
