Here is ours (via kits 28840, 42098) that corresponds to entry in 1850 Tazewell VA census: Family # 208, all born in Virginia: 208 LEWIS, JOHN 29 M FARMER (born around 1819/1821?) 208 LEWIS, RODA 27 F 208 LEWIS, DAVID S 3 M 208 LEWIS, ALLEN F 11M M He is listed in Tazewell, VA tax rolls starting in 1843 paying for a horse and left the county somewhere between 1852-1854. He lived in Cove Creek area (by Dills, Hicks, Neal and Steele families). Both John and his wife listed VA for birthplace for their parents. Lewis is not a common surname in the records for that part of VA in early 1800's so I am hoping we can eliminate (or match) by DNA if your family was already tested. Thanks so much. Author: KarenDale900 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lewis/13606/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Apparently church records give his father's name as Enoch and based on trees at Ancestry, there must be some records that indicate he was born in Cumberland Co. PA. Assuming there is such documentation, Philip is almost certainly the son of Enoch Lewis of Tyrone Twp, Cumberland. Some of the family trees on Ancestry have Anne Evans as wife of Enoch. Source for that? I've found no evidence of her name in Cumberland--are there family records? I don't have much doubt that Philip of Clarion is the son of Enoch of Cumberland, but I need verification--will some of you please email me documentation: [email protected]? Enoch of Cumberland, born before 1755, was the son of Philip Lewis of Chester PA from 1753-1780s, later of Fayette Co. PA and a land owner in Monongalia VA/WV. A court record in Monongalia states Philip's four children as Catherine (Merrill), Enoch, Rachel (Williams) and Philip. A deed in Monongalia in which Enoch sold 1/4 of Philip Sr.'s acreage states he was of Tyrone Twp, Cumberland Co. PA. The deed (plus several for the rest of it) is dated 1805--so Philip died before that date, but probably not long before. During the Revolution, Philip and son Philip are documented in deeds and tax records in Chester Co. PA. Philip, Enoch, Catherine and Rachel are all documented in records from the Great Valley Baptist Church in Chester, both the original one and the later branch in W. Vincent Twp. I am descended from Philip's son Philip (Enoch's brother) who was in the Chester militia during the Rev. before moving to western PA. By 1796, Philip Jr. was in the Scioto Valley, Ohio. Some members of the family still live in Adams Co. OH. The earliest record I have for Philip Sr. is in Chester PA--1753 tax roll and 1756 militia. I think he was probably born in Wales but that's a guess. I think he was probably a Baptist in Wales as well--but that's also a guess! My brother, also Philip Lewis, has done the YDNA "test"--and matches no other Lewises. His only "matches" are at a great genetic distance (4, 5, 6) to several other Welsh surnames, Thomas and Phillips. No close family at all. It would help if there any male descendants of the Enoch>Philip line who still carry the surname Lewis and would be willing to do the DNA test. It always helps to have such confirmation! He was born before 1755 and died intestate about 1801 in Chester county, South Carolina. I have no idea where he was born but he married Sarah Murry, a daughter of James and Frances Murry. James was from Caroline county VA and lived there until at least the mid-1760s. By the the mid-1770s they're living in Ninety-Six District SC and sometime before 1790 they're in Franklin county NC. So George Lewis had to have been in VA or SC or already been related in some way. George Lewis bought land from a William McFadden in what would become Chester county in 1775 and he's on a Camden SC tax list in 1778. His wife Sarah died before him and isn't mentioned in probate. Abraham Ferguson and Isaac Hudson administered his estate. To the best of my knowledge, these are the children of George Lewis and Sarah Murry: 1- Sarah Lewis, married Jonas Backstrom, 3/22/1787-6/11/1848, died in Neshoba MS. 2- Hannah Lewis, married Francis Ferguson, b. bef. 1778, died 1860-1870 in Coahoma MS. 3- Nancy Lewis, married James H. Ferguson, 3/2/1778-10/18/1816. She died in SC but this family went to Pickens AL. 4- Titus Lewis, married Nancy unknown, b. 1780-1790, died 1848 in Chester SC. 5- Edward Lewis, haven't been able to trace him. 6- John Green Lewis, married Mary N. Edwards, 9/5/1798-10/22/1849, died in Neshoba MS. 7- Elijah H. Lewis, never married, b. abt. 1799, died 1856 in Leake MS. 8- Mary Lewis, married Robert McFadden, born abt. 1800, died 11/2/1863 in Leake MS. 9- David M. Lewis, married Mary N. Yarbrough, b. abt. 1783, died 1860s in Franklin NC. 10, 11, and 12- Also listed in probate are a James, Betsey, and George Lewis. Not traced. I've been looking at the nearby Lewises in SC and haven't been able to connect him to any of those families. If anyone has any ideas at all or connects to this family, I'd love to share information. Right now I'm completely stuck at George. TIA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She was born 19 September 1766, Dighton, Mass., to Loved Reed and Charity Phillips. She is not the Lydia Reed who was born on 12 April 1766 (daughter of Daniel Reed & Lydia Cook) and died 18 November 1804, Danvers, Massachusetts. That Lydia Reed was married in 1789 to John Jacobs. Therefore, all the many trees which show Lydia Reed (wife of Peleg Lewis) as having died on 18 November 1804 are incorrect. She was apparently still living with Peleg Lewis during the 1820 Census (Cortland County, New York), but she has not been located in the 1830 Census, so she probably died in the 1820s, Cortland Co., New York (not Cortlandt, Westchester, New York). -----------Hope this helps, Ken Kinman, descendant Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello, I think I've already mentioned that I've been trying to find out whether a former classmate of mine in 1950's, etc., was "distantly related" to me. We both had the name, LEWIS, so sat near each other from 3rd grade to 12 grade. Unfortunately, he passed this month. I have finally been able to find out about his grandparents. And, I'm finding out that he came from a long line of "Horace LEWIS." Seems like from ~1850 to 1950, and almost always in Arlington, MA. Yesterday I looked on-line for more information, and found a death record for a Horace H. LEWIS, b~1823 in MA. When he died in MA in 1902, his parents were listed as William LEWIS and Martha KING. It stated they were born in England. A little more investigating showed them from Co. Herefordshire ! I'm curious whether any researchers on this List also trace back to that County ! (Reminder that the bordering Counties, including Co. Shropshire, are just across the water from Wales. And LEWIS is a popular name in Wales. And, my ancestors trace back to Co. Shropshire, in the very late 1700's.) Betty (near Lowell, MA) List Administrator

The earliest mention in census records was in 1860, which had new information for me. It mentioned Horace H. LEWIS, b~1823 in Cambridge, MA. He died in 1902 in MA, and the record stated that his parents were born in England. The names of the parents were William LEWIS and Martha KING. And a record stated they had come from Co. Herefordshire, England. I checked out that county, and it is only a few miles from .Wales. and it borders on Co. Shropshire. And, Co. Shropshire is where I can trace my LEWIS ancestors back to. So, there is a small possibility that the 2 sets of LEWIS ancestors (of my friend and I) can be "distantly related" - possibly during mid-1700's in that area. I checked the archives of the ENG-HEREFORD List this morning, and the LEWIS name is mentioned many times. So, I just joined that List so I could post a query. LEWIS, 32, in Arlington. His wife is Josie, 29, both from MA families. They have a daughter, 5, son, 2, and an infant son. And, he has his mother, Mrs. Mehitable LEWIS, 63, living with them. In 1910, Horace E. LEWIS, 62, is living alone in Arlington. In 1910, Horace A. LEWIS, 31, is in Cambridge, and with a wife, Sarah, and an infant son, Horace A. In 1920, Horace A., 41, with his wife, Sarah, and son, "Osborne," is 10 and son, Samuel, is 4. So, so far, this line of Horace LEWIS, goes back to one b~1848 in MA. Sorry .. I got interrupted in the middle of this posting, and I can't finish what I want to say right now. But, I did make a discovery. The census records show that the Horace LEWIS in Arlington is part of a line of Horace Lewis' going back to ~1800, all born in MA. But, before that, the ancestor was from England in the late 1700's. And, he seems to come from Co. Herefordshire, England. I checked and that is only a few miles from Wales, and it borders on Co. Shropshire, England. I believe the father of my friend was .. Horace Osborn LEWIS, probably born between 1910 and 1920 in MA. And, his grandfather might have been Horace A.. LEWIS, b~1880 in MA. I've only been finding out about this family for a week, so I can't go back farther than that, yet. But, there might have been a Horace E. LEWIS in the family. An FYI is that the 1900 census has a probable widow, Mrs. Josephine T. LEWIS, 50, living in Arlington, MA. With her is a son, Horace A. LEWIS, 22, and a son, Edward C. LEWIS, 20, and a daughter, Ida F. LEWIS, 11. .. And, on-line I saw a birth for Horace A. LEWIS in July 1878 in Arlington, MA. And the parents were listed as Horace E. LEWIS and Jorier Fessenden LEWIS. And, a Horace A. LEWIS was buried in Arlington, MA, in 1952. An on-line query (was it this discussion?) mentioned someone looking for a "cousin," Horace A. LEWIS, b1878. His father, as stated, was Horace E. LEWIS, and his mother, as stated, was Joanna Tyler Fessenden LEWIS. He had a brother, Edward, and 2 sisters, Ida and Georgia. Same query from ..2004 .. said Horace Albert LEWIS married Sarah L. AUSTIN. And, they had 2 children, one being Samuel Austin LEWIS, b~1910. Samuel's wife was Elizabeth / Betty OSBORNE (sp?). And, on-line over the weekend, I found the 1940 census mentioning: Horace O. LEWIS, 30, living in Somerville, MA. (next to Arlington, MA). His wife was listed as Ida LEWIS, 30, and 3 children were mentioned: daughter, Judith, 3, and his father, Horace A. LEWIS, 61, and his brother, Samuel A. LEWIS, 24, were living with them. This seems to be my friend's family, and possibly they moved to Arlington ~1945. I'm told they had 2 daughters and one son. The census states that Horace O. LEWIS was born ~1910. And, the couple formerly lived in Plymouth County, MA. Does any of this look familiar to anyone? Betty (near Lowell, MA) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
