I have two instances in the family of John Henry Lewis of Tazewell county, VA... where a widowed child married a sister or brother of a deceased spouse. Was that a common practise in 1870's / 1880's? 1. Oldest son (David) died leaving his wife a widow. The second son (Allen) married the widow. Timeline Mar 1880 (Illinois) / Jun 1881 (Texas) 2. Oldest daugther (Ceilia / Cosby) died in childbirth, her husband married the second daughter, Mary Jane. Timeline Aug 1874 (Missouri) / Feb 1875 (Missouri) Families involved: Lewis, Barton, Pease. The Lewis' were in a witness protection plan, lol. Whenever I get close, the newspapers are missing and records do not exist. But seriously. Is it a custom to marry a widow or widower if you are unmarried sibling of the deceased? And if yes? Where is it common? England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland? These Lewis' came from one of those places... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In the book titled STANTON by Benjamin P Thomas on page 68 a few lines down it states that Secretary of War Edwin M Stanton married Pittsburgh socialite Ellen Hutchison who was a direct descendent of Meriwether Lewis. Of course CSA Secretary of War George W Randolph was Edwin M Stanton's counterpart and he was Thomas Jefferson's grandson. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the exact same day and John Adams was well known to be related to several families on the Mayflower. The family I know personally is the Doty family of Edwin Doty who both moved to Pittsburgh and Santa Barbara California. They seem to be intermarried with these families who have a connection to General Sir Robert Sedgwick of the Massichutchis Bay Colony. These are the same Sedgwicks as Fort Sedgwick and Eddie Sedgwick who was Pittsburgh artist Andy Warhol's girlfriend. Everybody is buried at Allegheny Cemetery around General Alexander Hays and his son Gilbert Adams Hays who by the Pittsburgh social Register, was a direct descendent of President John Adams. FYI the Pittsburgh Mellon family are not pleased with this research. My research is based on the Myers Hays Mordecai families of Boston Banker Moses Michael Hays who married Rachael Myers and this newspaper clipping. So, I had to look it up. It seems you are looking for a family in .. Wales ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swansea_Valley Since you are looking for information in - Wales - have you checked out the 1881 census for Edward and Hannah LEWIS ? And, I believe the 1901 census is available in the U.K., so you could look up the Llewelyn LEWIS family that year. And, there is at least one Message Board or Mailing List for Wales. http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/WLS/WALES-GEN.html Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) (on Lists and Boards for 15 yrs.; now an Admin for 13 Lists and 5 Boards) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
