Hello all: I'm concerned that the spam list activity earlier this year killed off the Lewis list, as I haven't heard anything since may. My interest in is Edmond Lewes of Watertown and Lynn, Massachusetts, who came to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634 on the ship /Elizabeth/. I'm searching for possible ancestors and siblings, most likely in Suffolk, but possibly elsewhere in the UK, or ?? This Edmond Lewis is ofetn connected with an alleged Edmund Lewis of Llys Talybont, Glamorgan, Wales, but there is no evidence to support the existence of this person, nor to demonstrate any connection with Edmond Lewes of Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Best to all of you in your research, Michael Alan Lewis Santa Cruz, California
On this thread, I see Winchester as the city listed here. My great grandfather is Winchester Dane Lewis, from Athens, Morgan County, Ohio, leaving after Civil War service for the Union and becoming established in Texas, in Red River County. I always wonder if his first name is an association of the family with a place. His father was James Lewis. There are webinars you can watch and other things that will help you. Order an Ancestry.com DNA test. They have developed some great tools for connecting to other descendants of your ancestors and you don't need to be a scientist to understand them. I have proven the parentage of a family member who was taken in and never legally adopted with Ancestry DNA. My most recent DNA projects are helping to find relatives/ancestors of 2 boys whose fathers are not in the picture. Don't assume that the standard records/hints that come up in the little leaf hints are the only ones Ancestry has. Use the search, but don't get too precise on the search criteria. Check for State census records. Many states had their own census in between national censuses. (Iowa has multiple pages of information in the 1925 census. Ancestry only indexed the first page the person was on, but go the next page. It gives the names of the parents of the person, their ages, where they were born and married.) City directories and newspapers are great for finding people between censuses or after 1940. Don't rely on other people's trees or findagrave.com for anything except a clue. It often is correct, but you'll also find plenty of mistakes. If you copy incorrect information, you'll be headed in the wrong direction and helping to spread faulty information. I hope this helps. It is only a drop in the bucket of the possibilities on Ancestry and its affiliated websites. (No, I'm not an Ancestry employee!) Good luck! In any event you might want to look at what Mark Twain has to say about the area and trace the Mullens of Mullen's Trail. Everybody seems to center around the Battle of Horseheads. I got quite a bit on Reuben from Sue G. back in 1999 when we exchanged information. Bridging the gap between Reuben's father and grandfather has been difficult. Several people believe they have the line traced (through family oral history or even "internet search") but so far none of them have been able to find any independent documentation (marriage records, wills, etc.) of it. I am searching for the parents or any siblings of Samuel LEWIS (1830-1877). I believe, his middle name was COOK, but some sources list his middle initial as a "G". He lived in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada, married Sarah Ann PACKARD (1832- 1902) daughter of Moses PACKARD in 1849 in Stanstead. Moved to the US in 1869 and settled in Malcom, Powesheik, Iowa. He and 2 of his children (twins) died in November 1877 of smallpox and are buried there. His widow, Sarah and surviving children a son, Justus P. and daughter Clara Smith (widow of Lewis Smith) later settled in Hartford,CT. Any leads to his ancestors would be greatly appreciated.
