    1. Re: [LEWIS] LEWIS Digest, Vol 4, Issue 75: re. cousins - Thornton/Lewis
    2. Stan McConnell
    3. It's easy to figure out the degree of "cousin-ness" if you just remember to count the g's in the nearest common ancestor. That is, if the common ancestor is the grandparents, two people are first cousins; great-grandparents - the two are second cousins, and so on. In the case of two people with a different number of g's to a common ancestor, e.g., myself and my brother's son, we are first cousins once removed, since my grandparents (one g) are his great-grandparents (two g's). I had to sort this out when I found that my mothers parents were double first cousins. And doesn't that look strange on a family tree? Their names were Lincoln Thornton and Alice Lewis, born in Ankeny, IA, and settled in Artesia, CA.

    1. [LEWIS] POW/MIA's
    2. Please support our troops and never forget. WWII MISSING SERVICE MEMBERS NOW LISTED ONLINE The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) has an electronic database listing the names of service members still unaccounted for from World War II that is available for family members and researchers. This listing will aid researchers and analysts in World War II remains recovery operations. Before this 3-year-long effort was completed in 2007, no comprehensive list of those missing from World War II has existed. This database lists nearly 78,000 names and was compiled by researchers from DPMO and the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command. They used hard-copy sources including "The American Graves Registration Service Rosters of Military Personnel Whose Remains Were Not Recovered" from the National Archives II repository in College Park, MD, and "The World War II Rosters of the Dead." Once transferred into electronic formats, they used computer programs to compare the two lists and determined possible discrepancies among the entries. These differences were then! resolved using additional sources from the National Archives and thousands of personnel files from the Washington National Records Center. Efforts to gather more data on unaccounted for World War II service members continue. New names and information will be added as historical documents and personnel files are located. The names of servicemen whose remains are recovered and identified in the future will be removed as families accept the identification and inter their loved ones in ceremonies of their choice. This World War II database, along with databases listing the missing from the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War and Gulf War, are available on DPMO's web site at www.dtic.mil/dpmo. For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit this same web site or call 703-699-1169. (This information was taken from Department of Defense News Release #689-07 of June 4, 2007.) http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo/pmkor/index.htm
