Author: bartonlewis2 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lewis/11939/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Can someone answer a question on how to read the codes for a given person in the Lewis Letters? For example here is "James [Lewis] 17 v. p. 13 Vol. IX;" I assume I should be looking for a number in Volume IX for him; but which? What does the "v." stand for? Each volume has a series of 12 numbers, one issue per month; so what is this 17? I would appreciate some insight. Thanks. 1. [LEWIS] Lewis Family History Bible On E-Bay
    2. Hayes Philip L
    3. Don't know if this can help anybody, but I was alerted to a family bible on ebay through a saved search (Im looking for a miracle). The pictures show the names of several Lewis (none of them mine). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400037578635&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123 "Up for auction is a really neat antique 1800's Leather Bound Family Bible from the Lewis Family. What's really special about this family is that my friend on ebay, "1fabulousfind" had the Dag. Photo Of Captain Lewis, (that auction is already closed). This bible came from the same estate sale as that photo and this bible is from his family and in the photo ablum section at the back is a CDV Photo of a much older version of Captain Lewis. Printed inside is; "The Holy Bible", "With The Apocrypha, Psalms In Metre, and Marginal References And Readings", "To Which are Added A Pictorial HIstory of the Books of the Bible, by Rev. Washington B. Erben, Rector of the Church of the Redeemer, Philadelphia, and the Illustrated Comprehensive Dictionary Of The Bible, by Rev. Alfred Nevin, D.D., LLD. .......With Several Hundred Engravings, On Wood and Steel, Philadelphia; John E. Potter and Company, No. 617 Sansom Street. There are some lovely printed engravings that were drawn by the famous french artist, Gustav Dore. Tucked inside the bible was a family Register from Charles Henry Lewis born 1819 in East Town, NY, and is wife, Maria Lewis born 1821 in New Haven, NY. It also lists their five children, date, and place of birth and sadly, four have their dates and city where they died as young children. Their only surviving child was Charles Henry Lewis, born in 1842, in Milwaukee. Inside the bible, is a beautiful, colorful "Family Record" engraving, where the other Lewis Family members continued their family history. The very back of the bible has a section for family portraits and there are some cdv's and tintypes. There is wear to the outer cover, i.e. the leather is worn in spots but the gold gilded lettering is nice on the front cover and spine. The spine is fairly tight and all the pages are firmly attached. There is some minor wear/tattering to some of the pages but overall, it's in very nice condition for it's age with no big tears, no taped or missing pages and there are no odors, etc. It measures; 12-1/2" x 10" x just under 2-3/4"." Hope it helps someone. Philip L. Hayes phil@hayesfamily.us http://www.hayesfamily.us Monroe, CT USA "Genealogy is where you confuse the dead and irritate the living."

    3. Looking for information on the descendants and lineage of James Willis Lewis and his wife Elizabeth. He is found on the tax lists of Crawford Co., Arkansas in 1836 and 1839. He and his family are on the 1840 Richland, Crawford, Arkansas census, 1850 Prairie, Arkansas, Arkansas census, and his wife is found with some of their children on the 1860 Freestone, Texas census. This is part of my research on the Lewis lines found in Northwestern Arkansas in the 1800s. There is a James W. Lewis who was b. abt. 1832 in Missouri; son of Elijah Lewis and Sarah Jane Hobaugh both born in Kentucky. They are all found living in Jasper, Crawford, Arkansas in 1850. It might be that James Willis Lewis b. abt. 1800 is related to Elijah Lewis b. abt. 1802 in Kentucky probably to John Lewis b. bet. 1760-1770. 1 James Willis LEWIS b: Abt. 1800 d: Aft. 1850 in probably , , Arkansas, USA .. +Elizabeth [--?--] b: Abt. 1812 in , , Tennessee, USA d: Aft. 1860 ...2 Nancy LEWIS b: Abt. 1836 in , , Arkansas, USA ...2 Thomas J. He is married to Matilda, the oldest child of Wm. & Jane Wood. Matilda was born in Tennessee in about 1814. They have a three year old boy named William, born in Missouri. They arrived in Arkansas about 1846 from Missouri. His father and brother are blacksmiths. Daniel Lewis was a wagon maker, as are several other neighbors. There were harness makers and gear makers in the area as well. Wiley is twelve in 1850. He is a literate young man and starts to work earning income to assist his dear mother Jane. He visits with Mr. Lewis just down the road and is hired. Wiley will be taught carpentry and wagon building by Daniel Lewis, his uncle by marriage. Wiley will become an accomplished carpenter and a 'wheelwright.' Matilda and Daniel have five children: William L. Lewis (b 1847 MO), Jasper N. Lewis (b 3 Aug 1850 AR), Lawrence Lewis (b 1854 AR), Lavina, (Lorena) (b 1855 AR), Mary A. Lewis (b 1860 AR). In an 1870 Census, Jefferson Co.
