A few years ago you had a brief correspondence with a cousin of mine (who has lost your e-mail address). You e-mailed to her a photo of the headstone of Frances Jayne Lewis in Huntington Cemetery and you expressed a wish to also have a photo of the headstone of her husband William Bertram Lewis. Well... I was at that cemetery a few weeks ago and I took photos of all of the LEWIS headstones there. I have William's, his wife Frances' and his children: George 1, George 2, Frances, Caroline and I have photos of the stones of his parents Jerusha and Nathan Lewis. If you would like, I will gladly e-mail to you copies of these photos. I have already posted edited versions of these on Find-A-Grave.com. By the way...there was also a stone inscribed "Mrs. Elizabeth" that was set between Jerusha and her granddaughters Frances & Caroline, would you happen to know who this woman was because the rest of the inscription was illegible to me? I've done what you are doing and it isn't easy but it is possible to succeed. I found a post you had made on a people-search forum looking for Joel. I also see that you believe that there was a potential link to a John Laws of New Bern. What leads you to believe he is dead? You may want to try and get an obituary for John that would list next of kin and attempt to contact them for information. If he was a former trooper, there may be an organization related to law enforcement in or near New Bern that can help you get information on John. Researching his mothers family to see if there are any of the Laws family left in Craven County, NC that may know something may be your best bet. Your husband doesn't have any elderly aunts or uncles that may know anything of this Betty? Have you tried the Veterans Administration or anything? I found a website that may be of some help. http://www.vetfriends.com/search.cfm I am the administrator of this message board and if I can help by brainstorming with you to figure this out feel free to email me. 3. Hi, Betty! I am wondering where & how you got records from Nova Scotia, Canada? I have a prob. Tory, Freeman Sears, maybe born5 Jul. 1757 Yarmouth, MA who marr. Rosanna Hoyt (do not know where or when): Their son Frederick Sears was b, 1791 Canada per census d. 28 Nov. 1870 Port Byron, NY aged 79 yr. 5 mo. 8 da. He may have been s/o John 4 & Priscilla (Sears) Sears, but is not mentioned in father's will. He marr. Betsey (?). They had dau. Sarah who marr. Orin Jones and they were my paternal gr. grandparents. Years ago I wrote to Nova Scotia via snail mail, but never got anywhere. At almost 82 I am not very computer smart, but would like to solve this line if possible. Thank you for any help or info on this brickwall. Good luck with your Lewis line. I have one in RI, but then it goes to NJ and then to NYS. Very sincerely, Ruth E. 1. [LEWIS] LEWIS in Canada (Nova Scotia, etc.)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, My great-grandfather, John "Stanley" LEWIS, was only in Nova Scotia from 1874 to 1881. He had come from England in 1874 as a "British Home Child." * And, in 1881 he brought his new family down to MA where they settled in Stoneham. He and his wife had 13 children. But, on the ship with Stanley were 3 LEWIS girls, ages approx. 14 down to 7. I believe the 14-yr-old married a few years later. But, I've never found out what happened to the 2 younger girls, Elizabeth and Mary. Because they were young, they might have been adopted in the 1870's and had their names changed. During my 5-6 years of researching them, I found out there was a Waitstill LEWIS in Nova Scotia early on, and there were annual reunions for his descendants for many years. Just an FYI for you. However, I am still looking for other people researching LEWIS families around 1800 in Shropshire Co., England, and then in Lancashire, England, after 1830. Betty (near Lowell, MA) ("British Home Children" is the term for the "tens of thousands" of children who arrived in Canada from 1860 to 1930's - from all over the U.K. In the U.K. they were referred to as "Child Migrants.")
