I live in Liberal Kansas. I have been doing genealogy for about 30 years and enjoy the access that the Internet have given to us that live far out from the population centers. My search toward the Lewis line started with the murder of my great grandparents in Southern Oklahoma in 1895. The mother was Louisa Lewis, daughter of Martin and Winnie (Allen) Lewis of Cocke Co. TN, to Collin Co. TX in 1867. I in the last month have become a BIG fan of findagrave.com. I have had virtually ALL my direct ancestors graves sent to me on line by different volunteers in different states. You might try it. Just last week I asked for a picture of a grave in Farmersville, TX. The morning after I asked, the digital picture was sent to me by a volunteer who lived nearby. This has happened to me a number of times. Great site. Now about our Lewises. Here is what you do. 1. Go to Yahoo and type in John Lewis Milly Canady in the browser. Click to search. 2. The third entry down it says "Martin's Mother and Father". Click the entry to the website. 3. Spend a good time reading Jimmy Lewis's website about the Lewis family. By the way, he lives in Jacksonville, AR, just next to you. Get back to me and tell me how you enjoy the site. Look forward to hearing from you!! Thanks for your reply, Gene. The post you read is several years old and I've learned lots since then. Firstly, my John R. Lewis is not directly from the Lewis/Layman line. I was initially led to believe this by others, but upon doing my own research, found this not to be the case. To find my info look under Hall123 in World Project at Rootsweb or my unfinished Lewis pages here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~toomuchtime/pagebnew.html -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: LEWIS@rootsweb.com Sent: Wed, 8 Apr 2009 8:34 am Subject: Re: [LEWIS] John R. However, the dates of their births don't reconcile. Some of us think that Diana (as we know her) had a brother named John, and since she was born either in 1828 or 1830, he could have been born within a year or so of her. We have a Baxter reunion in McKinney every year in the middle of June, and another Baxter reunion in Sulphur Springs the last Saturday in June at Uncle Max and Aunt Sherry Baxter's farm. John Leith Lewis and Aaron Baxter, our ggggrandfathers are from Cocke Co., and the Baxters owned proplerty on what they called English Mountain, by English Creek. We have pictures of the (I think Sam Baxter's) old homeplace. The Bryants are our cousins, I think through Jane Bryant, a grandmother. I am trying to find out about the Lewis line, and am stuck with John Leith Lewis and Sarah Leannah Brown Lewis Baxter. Whew! Our grandmother was Diana (Delphia in one cencus) amd I want to know who her mother was that married John Leith Lewis before he married Sarah Leannah, because Sarah had her and maybe two more (sons) before she married Aaron Baxter. That is! , if I have that right without my notes. Born in Dallas, I grew up in Greenville, Texas; but now live in Little Rock, Arkansas, and I am finding that many of them (of course had to) came through here and so there are some spotted records here of them during that time. For the story on how some of the Lewis line got to McKinney and area's in and around in the year of Dec. 1867 you may see what is written on this page that was recounted by C.T. Lewis who was one of Felix Grundy Lewis' boys who was about 9 years old at the time of the trip. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jimmylewis/trip.html I am Jim Lewis from the Martin and Winnie Lewis line. I was born in Mckinney Texas in 1948 and lived there until about 1969 and then moved to Arkansas. Had been living here for many years before I found out that my great grand father Andrew Jackson Lewis along with other family members are buried in Northern Arkansas in a little place called Farmington Arkansas. My page with family history is located at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jimmylewis/ Please understand that most of this is recounted from different family members and not all of it has been confirmed and there may well be typo- and spelling errors. I have not felt well for sometime now and have not updated these pages as I need to do. But they are there for what they are worth to help others in their search. Stanley LEWIS who arrived in Halifax, NS, CAN, in 1874. He was a "British Home Child" and of the many other children on the ship were 3 LEWIS girls. So, I wondered whether you knew for sure that your Harold LEWIS was born in N.S. Or, could he have been one of the "Home Children?" If he was born in Halifax ~1894, his parents might show up in the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census records which are now on-line. And, if Harold was in Boston ~1937, there is the possibility that he might show up in the 1930 US census. There are some researchers who could do that look-up for you. I'm seeking information on Harold A. (presumably Ambrose) Lewis, who was allegedly born around 1894 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was around the suburbs of Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA in 1937. It's possible that he was somewhere in Florida, USA around 1947. I have no information on others in his family, so nothing to make the magic link. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
