From what I have found, the orignal Martin Baty Lewis journals are in the Texas State Library in Austin, but the Dallas Public Library (8th floor) has copies of all of the journals. It has been confirmed by anyone who has seen these, what you are saying. This is the exact wording: "Samuel S. Lewis a son of John & Sarah Lewis was born in the State of Virginia July 4th A.D. 1784"; also "Samuel S. Lewis & Sarah Lemaster was married in the State of Kentucky Henry County August AD 1804"; also "Samuel S. Lewis Senr. deced on his own Plantation in his own dwelling house in Jasper County Texas, Feb 10th, 9 oc. PM, AD 1838 Being 53 years 7 month & 6 days of age". More interesting tidbits I have found: -------"1812 Ancestor Index" pg. 310 - Samuel Lewis b. Va 1785 d. Tex 1838 m. Sarah Lemasters - was a Private Indiana Militia; I have copies of the Receipt Rolls of Indiana Territory", pgs 616, 617a, 620; also ------"Photostatic Copies of Muster, Pay and Receipt Rolls of Indiana Territory Volunteers or Militia of the Period of War of 1812" by the U.S. Adjutant Generals Office, Pg 617, 620, 622 & 623, I have copies showing payroll recipts for Samuel S. Lewis's service in War of 1812. -------"National Genealogical Soc. Quarterly", Sept 1954, pg 118; , These sources show During War of 1812 Samuel was a private in Captain Craven Leyton's company of Mounted Rangers of Indiana Militia. During the War of 1812 Samuel Lewis' service has been difficult to determine. When his widow, then living in Newton County, TX, applied for Bounty Land she stated her husband's papers had been stolen by Indians. She was elderly and her memory did not serve her well. She knew her husband had served from the spring of 1813 to the spring of 1814. She thought perhaps his company was commanded by Capt. Zachariah Lindly (or Curry) in the regiment under the command of Col. Wm. McFarland, or a Col. DePaw. He was in Capt. Craven Leyton's Company which was mustered in for one year service May 1, 1813,and he may have served later in the Indiana Militia, as many men did. -----"War of 1812 Veterans in Texas"/Fay, pg 193 (same information as above); -------"Republic of Texas Land Records from State Archives" copies of deeds and original character certificate when he first came to Texas; ------ "Biographical Directory of the Texas Conventions & Congresses"/Rep of Tx, pg 19, 23, 25, 26, 124; He was a representative to the First Consultation and also to the First and Second Congress from Bevil County (now Jasper) in Republic of Texas Government, with Sam Houston as President of those legislative bodies. He died while serving second term. -------" The writings of Sam Houston 1813-1863"/Williams & Barker, pg 198; Sam Houston ordered the county to hold an Election to elect a new representative to congress to replace the vacated seat by the death of the Honl. Samuel S. Lewis. I have copies of all of these papers. -------"Tales from the Old Stone Fort"/Linda Devereaux pg 67; Both Samuel S. Lewis and Martin B. Lewis are listed in the roster and fought for Texas independence in the battle at the 'Old Stone Fort' at Nacogdoches, Texas; (This stone fort is now located at the Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches. I have a picture of my son Brent standing in front of it); -------The following books list documents which I got copies of from the Government Records in the Archives in Austin, Tx: ------ "First Census of Texas 1829-1836"/Marion Mullins, pg 24; ------ "Residents of Texas 1782-1836"/Univ. of Tx, pg 17; -------"Citizens of the Republic of Texas"/Mrs. Morris, pg 368; -------"Character Certificates in the General Land Office of Texas"/gifford White pg 109; -----"-Abstracts of Land titles of Texas"/WillieTindall pg 792; I have lots more too. But no hint of Samuel's parents, or which John & Sarah they were. I read that a representative did the DNA. Do you all know if it was Arthur Lewis? Betty's mention of a Lewis family in this old Oklahoma history book caught my attention because my Lewis family is also mentioned in the same book! My Lewis family is also mentioned in several places in Emmet Starr's book here uner Judge Bluford West Alberty on p.543 http://books.google.com/books?id=Ei0TAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA543&lpg=PA543&dq=bluford+west+alberty&source=bl&ots=Mn33htQ69-&sig=3OOZA83o9_aUetXi6XFnrmL-y50&hl=en&ei=vgssStSMM5OktweX8N3CCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3 In the Oklahoma Hisory book my Lewis family is on p.227 also under Bluford West Alberty. http://books.google.com/books?id=SjoVAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA227&dq=bluford+west+alberty&lr= A lot of old history books have family histories so search in Google Books also. Hello, Just wanted to offer an FYI that I watched the 2nd half of a documentary on the history of ..cows.. in our world. I think it was called "Holy Cow." Cows and cattle and their importantance in every part of the world, and in every nation, were discussed. But, one interview was with a "LEWIS" family in England who had been "cattle / cow farmers" in their area for many generations. From memory, I think the first was a Thomas LEWIS. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/holycow/ Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) FYI: My ancestor was Richard LEWIS, b~1804 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. Actually just yesterday I found out more about County Shropshire. In nearby Telford, on the River Severn, there is an "Iron Bridge" which is famous. It was built by the very first family who invented the "smelting of iron with coke" (rather than with charcoal). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironbridge_Gorge http://www.ironbridge.org.uk/ (Researchers tell me there were at least 3 LEWIS couples in the large town (now city) of Shrewsbury who could have been the parents of Richard.)
Hi again, I just did another search for "LEWIS family, England, cows," and found a few sites which might interest someone: This site mentions a Stan LEWIS who returned to England to visit relatives. Coincidentally, my great-grandfather went by the name, Stan LEWIS (also John LEWIS in records). He was born 1859 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, and had a father, John LEWIS. http://lewislithuania.com/England.htm You never know what you are going to find in a Google search. This page from an on-line book mentions a family in Oklahoma: http://books.google.com/books?id=SjoVAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA385&lpg=PA385&dq=%22The+Lewis+Family,+England,+cow%22&source=bl&ots=OhZVy0l3Sc&sig=XSNuTxrZNuR95C5BSfS8FqBv3tg&hl=en&ei=r5QrStjCNIXBtwe8kpGmCA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5 Here is a family-history page mention a LEWIS who first arrived in R.I.: http://www.lawrencecountyohio.com/families/k_p/John%20Lewis%20I%20&%20Children%20041007.pdf Going back to the PBS documentary mentioned in my other posting, this page gives the hint that the long-standing "LEWIS beef farm" was probably in "North England." http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/cattle/shorthorn/ I changed the "search term" a little and found this newspaper article about a "LEWIS Farm" in Concord, NH: http://www.concordmonitor.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060719/REPOSITORY/607190320/1265/48HOURS This site mentions a "LEWIS Farm Conservancy" in Maine. I read last month about a different farm in Maine - where the elderly owner could no longer run his farm, and he wanted to sell it, and no one would buy it. His long-time farmworker wanted to buy it but couldn't finance the purchase. http://www.lewisfarm.net/community2.asp When I first started finding out about my great-grandfather, John "Stanley" LEWIS (1859-1923) who was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, I found out about the famous "LEWIS Department Store" in Liverpool. I inquired and found out that family had no connection to my John LEWIS family. http://www.johnlewis.com/Shops/DSShop.aspx?Id=6 Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) Remember to check the archives of all the Lists and Boards for your surnames and place-names. Not a computer dummy. I was in reunion.com once and I was gong to find out who all was on there from my email address book. changed my mind and went back a page. It added everyone anyways. i had to go and delete all of them plus inform on person i know who is a detective to fix it as people who may notlke him might find his real name. Bonnie, I got one of these from the site with your name & also another friend of mine did this also without meaning to either. It seems like that site is being deceptive, because she didn't realize that pictures had been sent to everyone on her list either. So, I completely understand.
