    1. [LEWIS] Wives of James Boone Lewis b. abt. 1851 Crawford, Arkansas ??
    2. Susan Burgess
    3. Does anyone have proof of the wives of James Boone Lewis? How many times was he married? Did he divorce any of his wives? Where and when did his wives die? James Boone Lewis b. abt. 1851 (some say 1849) in Crawford County, Arkansas to James M. Lewis and Catherine (possibly McCurdy). He died May 5, 1936 in Modesto, Stanislaus County, California. He married at least two times, maybe four: 1) Mary Morris. 2) Mary Roberts, 3) Mary Whitcamp, and 4) Cordelia Lingerfelt (Mrs. Cordelia Dedmon). Mary Morris was born the 10th of August, 1849 in Kentucky according to some researchers. I haven't seen proof of this date, but she is listed as age 30, born in Kentucky in the 1880 census of Cedar Creek, Crawford, Arkansas. Others say she was born in 1854. She and James had seven or nine children: John W., July C., Wade Halden, Elza Amaca, Samuel Houston, James Word, Mallie Arleva, and possibly Benjamin Harrison and Nathaniel L. Lewis. Some researchers list Mary Morris Lewis's death the 24th of September, 1882 in Crawford County, Arkansas, USA and her burial in Oliver Cemetery in Crawford County, Arkansas, USA. If this is true then she couldn't be the mother of Benjamin Harrison and Nathaniel L. Lewis since they were born in 1884 and 1885. I have not seen proof that the death and burial information is correct. Some researchers list James marrying 2) Mary Roberts between 1882-1883 and that Benjamin Harrison and Nathaniel Lewis are her sons. However, descendants of Benjamin Harrison Lewis say his mother and the mother of Nathaniel L. was Mary Morris and that she died in 1916 in Ravenna, Fannin County, Texas, USA. If Mary Morris lived until 1916 then she and James must have divorced because he is listed in 1900 with a wife, Mary who was much younger and born in Arkansas and in the 1910 census he is living with his next wife, Cordelia. Cordelia is definitely his wife but did Mary Roberts even exist? The wife listed with him in the 1900 census appears to be 3) Mary Whitcamp. The Arkansas Marriage Index lists a Mary Whitcamp and J. B. Lewis marrying the 7th of June, 1888 in Crawford County, Arkansas, USA. The male in this record is not proved to be James Boone Lewis however. It could be a different man. If Mary Morris died in 1882 and he married a Mary Roberts she would be the mother of Benjamin Harrison Lewis b. 1884 and Nathaniel L. Lewis b. 1885. Then they must have divorced or she died before 1888 when he supposedly married Mary Whitcamp or at least by 1910 when he was married to 4) Mrs. Cordelia Dedmon/Deadmon m. abt. 1909 (as found in the later census records). She was born to Jacob Lingerfelt and Mary Catherine Gregory April 20, 1871 in Tennessee. I am not sure that James had all these wives or that their data is correct. I can't find Mary (Morris) Lewis in the 1900 or 1910 census. If she didn't die until 1916 where is she? James Boone Lewis is living with his wife who I believe to be Mary Whitcamp in 1900. I guess it is possible that the Mary listed in the 1900 census could be Mary Morris with incorrect information. Mary (Morris) Lewis is not living with any of her children in 1900 or 1910. She is definitely not living with James Boone Lewis in 1910 when he is married to Cordelia. Did they divorce? Did Mary Morris marry again and became Mrs. Roberts?? Does anyone have any definitive proof that solves any of these ambiguities? This may be James Boone Lewis 1870 Census: Richland, Crawford, Arkansas; Roll: M593_51; Page: 235; Image: 242. My Lewis line is the line that came from Mass to Connecticut to Susquehanna County in Pennsylvania. I didn't know of any Lewis lines that descended from George that went on to NC or SC. Could you tell me which line it is that is believed to have done this? In this second part of my post I would like to ask you a few questions about the DNA testing. I know one requirement is that it has to be a male that gets tested. Are there any other requirements such as they must have the Lewis surname? Also, please forgive my ignorance, but how is it possible to link modern day DNA to the DNA of George Lewis of the 1600's? 3. I have in my records that they lived in Westmoreland County, PA. Where they were before that, I don't know. They moved from PA to Stark County, OH in the early 1800's. -----Original Message----- From: lewis-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lewis-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of micki Sent: Wednesday, June 24, 2009 2:15 PM To: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com; lewis@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LEWIS] Lewis DNA Data My lewis line went to PA what area are they from and where did they move from? I'd forgotten all about the messageboards. I would very much like to swap information with you. I have made some contacts withe the Juliens in recent times but have not acquired any further information on the Lewis family. I have made some progress on the Baldaros, tracing them back to Italy. Do contact me direct on trish2011@btopenworld.com if you like. Look forward to hearing from you. Perhaps we could exchange family photos?
