    3.     Happy Christmas Katie and to everyone!     Yes there seems to have been a dearth of given names in the 17th and 18th Centuries. The John Lewises and Thomas Lewises are replete.     It's so difficult to tease them out on the UK side of the Atlantic. Even going to England and viewing the records themselves (what a blast to hold a 400 year old parchment!), it is difficult and sometimes impossible to correlate the individuals there with our earliest ancestors in North America.     The subsequent myth of Lewis Welsh origins helps to obscure our more varied birth places for our earliest Lewis ancestors, many of whom were born in England, Scotland and Ireland, even though they themselves may have had Welsh ancestors that we can't see. Those of us with documented deep Lewis ancestry are fortunate indeed.     If I have observed a pattern, it is that the earliest Lewises (1600s) came from East Anglia, then from Yorkshire and Lincoln (early 1700s) and then from Wales (late 1700s to 1800s). Many of the 1600s Lewises had their surname recorded as "Lewes," though spelling of surnames was not standardized until the mid-1700s.     As more documents become available online, perhaps we'll come across the definitive documents for Planter John of Virginia and Edmond Lewes of Lynn, Massachusetts.     Until then we can enjoy our Celtic heritage and celebrate Christmas in the grand tradition.     Michael Alan Lewis     Santa Cruz, California On 12/23/18 9:11 AM, [email protected] wrote: > My fondest desire is to find the ancestors of "Planter" John Lewis, b. > circa 1720 in Virginia, d. 1800 in Albemarle County, VA. 2. My fondest desire is to find the ancestors of "Planter" John Lewis, b. circa 1720 in Virginia, d. 1800 in Albemarle County, VA. He is referred to as Planter John because his will begins, "I, John Lewis, Planter of Albemarle County, VA..." Any help would be greatly appreciated and the best Christmas gift ever. My sister and I have researched this line for about 30 years and our cousin for many years before that. I am beginning to think he was in the witness protection program. There were so many John Lewises in that area during that time frame, but none of them check all the boxes. Merry Christmas everybody! 1. [LEWIS] Black Diamond Washington photographs including GIBBON - LEWIS Family
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" a group of old photographs of young ladies who I believe may have all lived in Black Diamond, WA at the time. I've included the list of photographs along with some additional information I was able to gather regarding those in the photographs. The first is a group photograph including: Jennie (I believe TURNBULL); Liz SPAIGHT; Bella FINN; Lil HUTCHINSON; Maggie EVANS; Edith BOWEN; Edith JONES; Annie HANSON; Agnes ( I believe TURNBULL); Mamie EVANS; and Mary J. THOMAS The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with the ladies all appearing to be in their teens or 20's. I believe that Bella FINN is Isabella M. DAVIES FINN b. 2 Aug 1873 the daughter of D. B. and Martha J. DAVIES and wife of W. C. FINN. Bella died 20 Feb 1895 and is buried in the Black Diamond Cemetery. Elizabeth A. "Liz" GIBBON SPAIGHT was b. 27 Jul 1871 in Yorktown, PA to parents David GIBBON and Mary LEWIS. Liz was one of 6 children born to this couple including, William David; Margaret; John; Elizabeth Ann "Liz" or "Lizzie"; David Jr.; and Mary Jane GIBBON, all born between 1862 and 1880. Liz married Thomas G. SPAIGHT with whom she had 4 children including, Helen, Margaret, Thomas Jr., and Samuel SPAIGHT all born between 1895 and 1906. Her husband died in 1926 and Liz and the children moved to Green River, WA. Liz died 22 Mar 1960 in Black Diamond or Seattle, WA and is also buried in the Black Diamond Cemetery. Edith L. BOWEN was living with her husband Joseph H. BOWEN in Black Diamond during the 1910 census along with children Margaret L. and Joseph E. BOWEN. Mary J. THOMAS was b. Dec 1870 and was living in Black Diamond during the 1900 census along with her Mother Elizabeth THOMAS and siblings William, Elizabeth, Maggie, Alice, and Evan THOMAS. Maggie A. EVANS was b. 1879 and married twice, first to Charles W. CAREY (1876-1918) and second to Frank A. YOUNG (1884-1962). Maggie had three children including, Hannah Jane CAREY LEWIS; George CAREY; and Maxine Marie YOUNG FINNEY, all born between 1896 and 1923. Maggie died in 1964 and is buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Issaquah, WA. The 2nd photograph is one of Gladys JONES STEELE which was taken at the Boyd Studio in Seattle, WA in the 1890's. Gladys appears to be in her teens or 20's at the time. Gladys JONES married James STEELE and together they had a son, James Harry STEELE b. 1904 and died in Renton, WA on 7 Jul 1944 and a daughter Winifred Evelyn STEELE WOODLEY b. 1908 and died in Renton, WA on 10 Aug 1959 The 3rd photograph is one of Selma HANSEN; Mella ALDERSON; and Gladys STEELE and a fourth unnamed woman, also taken at the Boyd Studio in Seattle, WA in the 1890's. The ladies all appear to be in their teens at the time. The 4th photograph is identified as Annie HANSON or HANSEN (name is spelled in two different ways on the back of the photograph) taken at the Boyd Studio in Seattle, WA in the early 1900's. Annie is likely in her 20's at the time the photograph was taken. I know that the TURNBULL girls were from Black Diamond and I'm guessing the entire group was as well. I'm hoping to be able to return the photographs to family and would appreciate you contacting me if you are a member of one of these families, or you know someone who might be related. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [LEWIS] Jacob Lewis/Eliza Bellis of NJ
    2. Greetings, A family legend claims that my 'orphaned' GG grandmother Ella Hummer (1864-1925) of Hunterdon County, NJ was the daughter of an Elizabeth Lewis and the granddaughter of a Jacob Lewis. While searching for matches for Jacob, I discovered a Jacob Lewis (b1814) who was married to Eliza Bellis in 1833 in Somerset County, NJ. Jacob was the son of an Isaac Lewis and Fanny Gertrude Kline. I'm interested in learning more about this Jacob, especially his children. I'd also like to find out if there were any other Jacob Lewises in Hunterdon or Somerset Counties during the early 19th century. Regards, Rick Novak

    3. I've "rescued" an old group photograph of the Faculty of Pacific College (now George Fox University) for the years 1903-1904. The photograph was taken at the Douglas Studio in Newberg, OR and includes the following faculty members: Acting President, Charles E. LEWIS Mabel H. DOUGLAS Francis K. JONES Robert W. JONES President, Edwin MCGREW Olney C. ALBERTSON Mrs. ALBERTSON Miss Jessie BRITT Miss Ella F. MACY On the back of the photograph someone has written "R. W. JONES I think was Grandma CHISLEN'S (last name is difficult to read) Brother" so I'm guessing that the photograph at some point was in the possession of the JONES Family. I'm hoping to locate someone from one of their families so that the photograph can be returned to the care of a family member. They came to the USA from Wales. I am looking for information on his family as well as the families of the others in your list. Thanks you for any help you can give me. Terry E. 1. [LEWIS] LEWIS & PACKARD, COOK or COPP in Stanstead @1750-1850 my brick wall
    2. debbiecotter via
    3. My brick wall: I am looking for the parents or siblings of Samuel (COOK or COPP) LEWIS, in 1849 he married Sarah Ann PACKARD (only daughter of Moses PACKARD) in Stanstead. They are my great-great grandparents. My suspicions are that he may be the son of William LEWIS a loyalist born in New York or New Jersey. Does anyone on this list have any connection or know where I can find info on his ancestry? Thank you, Debbie Cotter
