    3. Just a minor correction... that is "Humboldt" not "Humbolut" in California. gc-gateway@rootsweb.com wrote: > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: photo66666 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lewis/12134.3.1.2.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > One last place to look is Humbolut California. I Actually have records that the name is spelled both ways. Although on his grave stone it is Lamon. Lots of Crawfords and Lewis families are around his gravesite. My interest in Ward Hall Laman is in the last 10 days of Lincoln's life and the location of Ward H Lamon in those 10 days. Abraham Lincoln had a meeting with Gustavus A Myers sometime around April 4th or 5th 1865 in Richmond aboard the riverboat The River Queen. Was Ward Hall Lamon with Abraham Lincoln at that time? Records are very clear that the only Richmond City Official to show up for this meeting was Gus Myers. A John A Campbell was with him but he was a Southern Commissioner and not from the City of Richmond. The meeting was to plan the shutting down of the Confederate Government. I believe a second meeting in Richmond was planed sometime around the 14th or 14th of April. Do you know anything about this? Some of the family did move to I believe around the Yuba City area and Sutters Mill. My research right now is centered around Ward Hall Lemon who was from Illinois and President Lincoln's body guard. The Lewis family I believe are from Col Andrew Lewis and the Crawford family might be from Col William H Crawford. These families have a heavy Pittsburgh PA connection. If you really look at this, all these families are interconnected one way or the other including the southern families of Jefferson Davis and Robert E Lee. In starting this work, I find most interesting is how much Jefferson Davis looks like Abraham Lincoln without the beard. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Doing a little deeper looking at what you provided. Do you have a Lewis tie? If so, send me an email at gdcohrs@hotmail.com and I'll send you an 1860 census doc of Drusilla Lewis (as head) with 3 male and 1 female children. Their ages are spread from 23 to 7, so I suppose it could be possible that there is a possibility that Frances L. could have already wed if she was part of this family. I wonder when Martin died, and the circumstances of his death? Hope I can find Frances L. and her family ties. Thanks again. 1. Re: [LEWIS] Polish Surname changed to LEWIS at Ellis Island
    2. Betty and other Lewis researchers, I worked as a professional researcher for many years and occasionally heard this family lore story of name changes at Ellis Island. The simple answer is; it didn't happen. <<. Federal immigration inspectors were under strict bureaucratic supervision and were more interested in preventing inadmissible aliens from entering the country (which they were held accountable for) rather than assisting them in trivial personal matters such as altering their names.>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellis_Island Ralph Komives In a message dated 8/7/09 8:43:31 AM, bbffrrpp@comcast.net writes: > Hello, > > I chatted on-line this week with a LEWIS man, and out of curiousity I > asked > about his ancestors.    Come to find out his great-grandparents or > grandparents? came from Poland and had an unusual surname.   The officials > at Ellis Island changed their name to LEWIS. > > I just wondered if anyone else found this out. > > Betty             (near Lowell, MA) > > > (Still looking for descendants of the LEWIS brothers living in  Liverpool, > Lancashire, England, during 1830 to 1900.    Their father had come from > Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, born ~1804.) >

    2. Such name changes were also of of other ethnic old country and Russian families. Such a case was noted on another rootsweb list this past year in Louisville, Jefferson County Kentucky _KYJEFFER@rootsweb.com_ (mailto:KYJEFFER@rootsweb.com) , of a LEWIS named family and descents.
