Author: photo66666 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lewis/11677.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I now believe my Lewis family was from Col Andrew Lewis of Point Pleasant. It is said he was not related to the Lewis family of Meriwether Lewis but was related to the Meriwether family of Meriwether Lewis. I also believe my Alexander Lewis was related to Robert Fulton through the Smith family of Robert Fulton's mother Mary Smith. I have traced my Myers family to Chief John Logan. I have also traced them to Auburn NY. Ft Hill Cemetery is where Chief John Logan's monument is located. The Monument was ordered by Michael S Myers the first chairman of the Ft Hill Cemetery. What confused me is my great grandfather Jacob F Myers was listed in General Alexander Spotswood's Will. Gen Spotswood was married to Elizabeth Washington. Then Their son Alexander M Spotswood was married to Elizabeth Lewis who was a granddaughter of Betty Washington and Fielding Lewis. This I believe would make Elizabeth Lewis a cousin of Meriwether Lewis. The Myers family were surveyors for George Washington. I know for sure this family was building boats in Pittsburgh in the 1790's Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: SuZQ59 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lewis/11677.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Have seen your posts here and I believe on GenForum, I don't know if my information will help or hinder in your search. These Lewises are a confusing bunch, especially since they kept using the same names generation after generation, but here goes. This info. came from my mother, I have inherited the job of family genealogist and mother was not too careful about documenting her facts. I do know that almost all of this came from one of the following: "The Lineage of Mary Jane Elizabeth Lewis" by MJE Lewis, "Genealogy of the Lewis and Kindred Families" by John Meriwether McAllister, "Lewis of Warner Hall, the History of a Family" by Merrow Egerton Sorley and "Lewises, Meriwethers, and Their Kin" by Sarah Travers Lewis Anderson. She borrowed the books from someone so I do not have them to check these facts. I am still sorting and trying to verify. Fielding Lewis was the 3rd son of John Lewis and Frances Fielding. Fielding b. 7/7/1725 (this date comes from the "Legend of Lewis" site) d. 1/1782 m Catherine Washington (she was his 2nd cousin and also the 1st cousin of George Washington). She died after 4 years of marriage. Fielding then married Betty Washington who was the only sister of George Washington. I do not know how many children they may have had but I do know that they had a son named Lawrence Fielding Lewis (Jr?) and it was said that he was his Uncle George's favorite nephew. L. Fielding married Eleanor Parks Custis the granddaughter of Martha Washington. Eleanor's brother George Washington Parke Custis and Eleanor were adopted by George and Martha after the death of their parents. George deeded Lawrence and Eleanor a part of Mt. Vernon and they built a large home on their acerage naming it Woodlawn Plantation. The property is owned by the National Park Service today. Eleanor's brother owned and lived in the famous Custis-Lee mansion in Arlington, VA, his daughter Mary married Gen. Robert E. Lee. So far I have been unable to find any Alexander Lewis in the info. I have. There is no Nancy Ann Alexander mentioned nor any Fawcett, Pollock, Hamiltons or Fultons. Since I am really just begining I don't know enough to discuss much with you but would be glad to share what I have inherited from my Mother. I am not a direct descendent from this line but from Fielding's Great Uncle Robert who married Jane Meriwether. Hope this does not confuse more than it helps. Author: buckbrush Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lewis/12142.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have the Mexican War records for Willoughby Lewis from Greene County? If so, could you please post any information that might help us. I assume that this is Jacob and Mary's son, Willoughby, as the Greene County history states that he was a Confederate in the Civil War, and died at the Battle of Pea Ridge. Personnel at the Arkansas State Archives helped me in trying to locate him in a Confederate unit, but we couldn't find him. We did find his family, wife, Keziah Kissee, and children in Lawrence County, Arkansas. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I'll post my information slowly, as I have a full-time job and not a lot of extra time for this. Unfortunately, I have little proof for what I'll post, but I'll provide the evidence I have for my guesses. Please let me know about where I'm correct, and where I am in error. And, please don't be offended if I try to steal a member of your family. Just let me know. Also, if you would like work with me on building the site, let me know. When I first started researching this family in the 80s, I read that Jacob's wife, Mary, was a "Learsay," and of a native tribe from Virginia. The tribe was not one I'm familiar with. Since then, some have posted that she was Cherokee. It was also stated that Willoughby [I don't know which one] was known as "Woot" and Jacob as "Redcat" [or something similar], that they were fur trappers, and that Jacob, Willoughby and Chrisman, had travelled to Cooper County, Missouri, about 1847, where Jacob and Willoughby died. Chrisman returned to Indiana. If someone has a copy of this, could you post it? Thanks. Marilyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Here is the address to the conversion page. Just look under the heading for "ancestry" Not to worry since you can edit your info on ysearch. http://www.ysearch.org/conversion_page.asp If you had the test done recently I think there are only a couple of numbers to adjust. I guess uniformity is one of the main reasons that the surname dna project will only use results from one lab. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: biglen64 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lewis/12134.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Steven, I've been down a similar road with my William Lewis of Wilson, NC b1848 d 1908 I did a Y46 marker DNA test on ancestry.com with only one very distant match to someone with the LEWIS surname. Have you tried entering your results on Ysearch.org? The members of the LEWIS Surname Project (or at least some of them)have entered their results in the database which you can search and compare to. You just have to be sure and convert a couple of your values to be uniform when your submitting your entry. I've come up with more Lewis matches, although they are very distant as well as very close non-Lewis matches. I'm considering resubmitting a test to the surname project, familytree dna offers a special price if you've already been tested by another lab. There are a lot of Lewises out there. It's possible your close match just isn't in the database yet. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: powmiadna Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lewis/12138/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am searching for the families of three soldiers with the surname LEWIS that were lost in the Korean War. At this time the government has no family contact. At the time they were lost their remains were not recovered. Family DNA is needed to identify remains if and when they are recovered. At the time they entered service they gave their Home of Record as posted below Soldier: JOHNNIE LEROY LEWIS Born: 1928 Date of loss: November 4, 1950 MIA Home of Record: Chico, California Soldier: CHARLES LEE LEWIS Born: 1930 Date of loss: June 13, 1952 Home of Record: Norfolk County, VA Soldier: WILLIE ENCIL LEWIS Born: September 11, 1932 Home of Record: New Cumberland, WV When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. Our government has no family contact for the men listed. When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency. I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.
