Diminutives and nicknames are always tricky. I'm trying to determine if the two Elizabeth/Betty/Bettey Lewises are the same person (or not), despite a difference in birth year (Betty Lewis 1 = 1801 and Betty Lewis 2 = 1973.) If they were two different people, then just more information about each. Betty (one or both) was married to Henry Parfitt (1796 - 1858; Shepton Mallet, Somerset); possible children: Ann Parfitt (1821 - 1861 married to Henry Rabbitts (1836), Sarah Parfitt (1826), John Edward Parfitt (1827), William James Parfitt (1928), Elizabeth Parfitt (1831), [henry] Stephen Parfitt (1838) married to Margaret Jones (1836), Mary Louisa Parfitt (1841/2) and Mary Jane Parfitt (1845.) Thanks in advance for all replies. Kind regards Grant Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. We are in the process of putting those on CD. If you want we can send you a copy of the photo CD. I think Cleo's parents were James & Minnie Lawson. We are going to the Princeton Courthouse today to try to get more info. Our mother was Mary Etta Lewis daughter of Jesse and Cleo. Author: SuZQ59 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lewis/11677.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Have seen your posts here and I believe on GenForum, I don't know if my information will help or hinder in your search. These Lewises are a confusing bunch, especially since they kept using the same names generation after generation, but here goes. This info. came from my mother, I have inherited the job of family genealogist and mother was not too careful about documenting her facts. I do know that almost all of this came from one of the following: "The Lineage of Mary Jane Elizabeth Lewis" by MJE Lewis, "Genealogy of the Lewis and Kindred Families" by John Meriwether McAllister, "Lewis of Warner Hall, the History of a Family" by Merrow Egerton Sorley and "Lewises, Meriwethers, and Their Kin" by Sarah Travers Lewis Anderson. She borrowed the books from someone so I do not have them to check these facts. I am still sorting and trying to verify. Fielding Lewis was the 3rd son of John Lewis and Frances Fielding. Fielding b. 7/7/1725 (this date comes from the "Legend of Lewis" site) d. 1/1782 m Catherine Washington (she was his 2nd cousin and also the 1st cousin of George Washington). She died after 4 years of marriage. Fielding then married Betty Washington who was the only sister of George Washington. I do not know how many children they may have had but I do know that they had a son named Lawrence Fielding Lewis (Jr?) and it was said that he was his Uncle George's favorite nephew. L. Fielding married Eleanor Parks Custis the granddaughter of Martha Washington. Eleanor's brother George Washington Parke Custis and Eleanor were adopted by George and Martha after the death of their parents. George deeded Lawrence and Eleanor a part of Mt. Vernon and they built a large home on their acerage naming it Woodlawn Plantation. The property is owned by the National Park Service today. Eleanor's brother owned and lived in the famous Custis-Lee mansion in Arlington, VA, his daughter Mary married Gen. Robert E. Lee. So far I have been unable to find any Alexander Lewis in the info. I have. There is no Nancy Ann Alexander mentioned nor any Fawcett, Pollock, Hamiltons or Fultons. Since I am really just begining I don't know enough to discuss much with you but would be glad to share what I have inherited from my Mother. I am not a direct descendent from this line but from Fielding's Great Uncle Robert who married Jane Meriwether. Hope this does not confuse more than it helps. The 1841 and 1851 UK Census has Henry Parfitt married to Elizabeth Parfitt, born 1801 Downhead, Somerset. I have found a marriage event on FamilySearch for Henry Parfitt and Elizabeth Lewis on 1821. A number of Ancestry.co.uk online family trees also have a Bettey Lewis (possibly Luis or Luish) 1793 - 1858, also of Downhead, Somerset, married to Henry. Is someone able to shed some light on which, or both, Elizabeth and Bettey were married to Henry Parfitt? If both, which children belong to whom? Many thanks. Your help is appreciated. That's unfortunate. So if I am a male Lewis surname descendant and I've had my DNA tested elsewhere other than Family Tree DNA, I can't come to your party? What is the ethical and scientific justification for such a restriction? NOTE: I'm not suggesting a conflict of interest. I know that LJ Crain is a sincere and dedicated genealogy researcher, and I appreciate everything she's done to promote and sustain this project. It just seems suggestive at best, and counterproductive in the long run, if the true goal of this project is to research DNA connections, to limit one's participation to one DNA testing lab. One source for this claim is made at:http://www.tngenweb.org/benton/goodspeedhist.html 09/12/08; and, back on 5 April 2002 I made an inquiry to the LEWIS MSG. Board, with no success of replies. Now it's 2009. There is a David Lee Lewis born 30 January 1877, Camden, TN which is within Benton County, TN. This David Lee Lewis later died on 6 November 1938, and does not have a US SSI record. Apparently he died without a SS number. I have not yet discovered his wife's name, but he did have 7 children and so far I have found one of those children a son named Herschell Nathan Lewis, was born in Jefferson, Texas and as well as brothers, Herschell had a sister named Hazel Lewis who married a Mr. Burns and they lived in Sulpher Springs, Texas. I am trying to find out if anyone has connected David Lee Lewis born 30 January 1877, Camden, TN, to the original settler named David Lewis of Eagle Creek in TN. Perhaps there are other siblings of David Lewis (the settler) as we know there are 7 children of David Lee Lewis 1877 TN - died 1938 who may have died in Texas (Not proven yet) Any research is greatly appreciated. Not only are markers given in different order, but different markers are tested and expressed and weighted differently. And if you want to belong to the Lewis DNA Project which has 352 members you must test with our chosen lab. Their benefits are not available elswhere. 3. This turns out not to be the case. The results from any testing lab can be compared with the results from any other testing lab. If this weren't the case, there would be no use in doing any testing at all. Choose the DNA lab that works best for you and is recommended by other genealogy researchers. Don't expect excessive changes in your genealogy, nor should you expect any miraculous connections to appear that you don't already know. The most DNA testing can give you is confirmation of what you've already documented, or a new direction for documentary research. DNA testing does not prove any connections that are undocumented in public or private records. Documentation is still necessary and absolute. 3. Dear Ladyw8tn41,     DNA testing has been the best genology tool since bread & butter.   Anyone that says,     "its not perfected yet/or doesn't believe" is really saying I have been burnt.  and  that is not my family, that is not what I have told, my paper trail is correct, the DNA is wrong.     So you must be prepared for DNA results, many families have been caught by surprized from the results. Authors of family history books have been proven wrong.    Then it is time to re-valuate your information, because you now have another challange, the old question, who, what, when, where & why.   Each testing center has their own testing system & none match each other test centers. SO Which Testing center do I use?   (My suggetion only)  Is My Family Tree (Familytreedna.com) Is the only one that has a surname data base, people that can answer questions, help if needed. Other testing centers give you your results then you are on your own.  If you find yourself with that problem, Family Tree with compare your results for a small fee.   Family Tree should have another sale soon, I would wait till a new sale. (last sale was 36 markers $123 postaged included)   36 marker is the best way to go, it will put you with your proper family. 12 marker can show-up with a dozen surnames.     Good luck & happy hunting.       --- On Mon, 9/14/09, lewis-request@rootsweb.com <lewis-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: From: lewis-request@rootsweb.com <lewis-request@rootsweb.com> Subject: LEWIS Digest, Vol 4, Issue 259 To: lewis@rootsweb.com Date: Monday, September 14, 2009, 7:00 AM Today's Topics:    1. For the LEWIS project you would need a male participant who is either a born Lewis or biologically a Lewis. The cost is $99. or pay $25. more and and more than double the markers tested. If there are 4 of you, that's $31. each. https://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Lewis-2 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Alas, but it is too expensive--neither I nor any of my siblings have the dough for it. But if I ever get the extra money--you can bet that I'l be having it done! I found that DNA website a few years back too and salivated over the prospect of being able to have our DNA run.
