I have seen on several websites that John COUCH who married Mary/Polly BOON, was listed on the 1830 census. That is just not accurate. The John COUCH listed there was a much younger man. Neither can I prove that John COUCH was ever in Perry, or Clay Counties KY. While there was a John COUCH on the early tax records of Clay County, there is nothing to indicate whether he was John COUCH, Sr., or John COUCH, Jr. I have also seen that the COUCHES came to Clay County KY, at the same time the LEWIS' and CAMPBELL families. If so, then where were they on the census of 1810 Clay County. LEWIS and CAMPBELL are all I can find there. In fact, Martin and James COUCH were both in Washington County VA, in 1810. The last time I can find John COUCH, Sr. was 1800 Ashe County NC. It appears some of the old traditions are just not factual. Does anyone have documented proof that disputes my findings? A memorial has been established at the funeral home for the Muscatine Arboretum Mrs. Lewis was born March 14, 1921, in Murdo, S.D., the daughter of Ernest A. and Bertha A. Green Thomas. She married Lt. Stanley Lewis in 1943 in Charleston, S.C. She was part of a family of four brothers and two sisters who farmed in rural America in the 1920s and 1930s. All of her brothers and sisters raised their families in the Midwest and kept close family ties with each other. The original family homestead is still ranched by one of Eugene Thomas's sons. She rode a horse to school and saved every penny she earned for her college education. In 1942, she was working as a clerk at the Charleston Naval Base and met her husband-to-be. After they were married, her husband was promoted to Captain and assigned as OIC of a military weapons storage facility outside of Charleston. His marriage was fortuitous; a married officer was required at the storage facility. His regular artillery company then was assigned to a ship which was torpedoed and sank during its Atlantic crossing. After the war ended, she and her husband settled in Madison, Wis. They had a son Howard before moving to Muscatine in 1952. Major Lewis stayed active in the Army Reserve while employed at Ceylon, which later became Thatcher Glass and then part of the Dart Industries. She was very active in her community. She was a volunteer at Muscatine General Hospital. She was a district director of the Federated Garden Clubs of America and a president of the Floral Arts Club. She was a den mother to a group of Cub Scouts, a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the Muscatine Arboretum and The Daughters of the American Revolution, as both she and her husband had documented relatives that fought in the Civil War, the American Revolution and settled in the early colonies on the eastern seaboard. Growing up in a ranch setting between 1920 and 1940 was hard as there was no outside help for a struggling family. Family members had to work hard and long hours for food, water and fuel to heat and cook. At the original homestead, a depression in the earth marks the spot where they stored cut river ice in the winter under sawdust piles so there would be ice available in the summer. She always had a garden for fresh vegetables. All her life she enjoyed canning and preserving jellies, fruit and vegetables. She also enjoyed tutoring children in gardening and landscaping techniques and passing on her learned skills. This interest has continued with her son, grandson and families. She enrolled at Ames, Iowa for horticultural and landscaping classes in the 1970s; and then ran her own business, L&L Antiques, dealing in small collectibles and paperweights for many years. She enjoyed her trips to Europe for paperweight tours and her trips to the East Coast for Duplicate Bridge Tournaments. She enjoyed teaching people to play Bridge. During her last days she was still talking about playing another game soon with a favorite cousin that was coming to visit her. She designed her home and yard on Sunrise Circle around her love for gardening. She designed a memorial of wild grasses for her husband at the Muscatine Arboretum. In her last months she talked about how she wanted a memorial planting for herself next to his that would have annual and perennial flowers. She will be missed by her family and friends and always remembered as intelligent, polite and willing to share her knowledge of plants, Bridge, antiques and cooking. Survivors include a son, Howard E. Lewis and wife Sochie of Morgan Hill, Calif.; a brother, Eugene F. His boyhood was spent in Pletywood, Mont. He received his bachelor's of arts degree from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., and bachelor's of science in forestry from the University of Montana. He was drafted into the Army in early 1941. He attended Officer Candidate School in 1942, and was commissioned a Second Lt. Field Artillery Officer and was assigned to the Charleston Port of Embarkation, S.C. He spent the first eight months as an officer in charge of the cargo loading docks on the late night shift. During this period, he attended schooling and training as a Bomb Disposal Officer. He then made Commanding Officer of the Liberty Hall Ammunitions Storage Area, which is now a Naval installation on the back river off the Cooper River near Charleston, S.C. At the end of the war, he was an Operations Officer, Maintenance Officer and Storage Officer at the Charleston Ordinance Depot. He attained the rank of Major. For the next 33 years, he was a Purchasing Agent/Manager for the purchases of the CELON Company and Thatcher Plastic Packaging. The last 11 years of that time he also served on the Dart Industries Corporate Purchasing Committee. In later years he traveled on his motorcycle, covering most of the Western and Northern United States, Southern Canada, and coast-to-coast. He had been a resident of Muscatine since 1952, and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife Viola of Muscatine; a son, Howard Lewis and his wife, Cita, and their daughter, Marie, all of Morganhill, Calf.; grandson, Brian Lewis of San Francisco, Calif.; and a brother, Dr. Rand C. Services are 2 p.m. today at Roller McNutt Chapel in Clinton. Andy Nixon will officiate. Pallbearers are Don Newland, Bobby Hutto, Tommy Lewis, Pete Hubbard, Dick Smith and Tim Lewis. Burial will be at Hunter Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Curry was born Aug. 13, 1955, in Espanola, N.M. Survivors include her mother, Maudean Lewis of Clinton; a daughter, Serena Plunkett Hagevik and her husband, Dr. Andre, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Iselin Hagevik; a brother, Rick Lewis and his wife, Sandy, of Ashland, Mo.; a sister, Sandy Sam Roberts and her husband, Don, of Maumelle, Ariz.; four nieces, Kristin and Kayla Lewis and Carly and Camryn Roberts; special friends, Steven Berry and Linda Haley of Shirley, Ark.; and many other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Carvert A. 'Joe' Lewis; her grandparents, Andrew and Rebecca Lewis and Jesse T. and Sally Chastain Smith; and a nephew, Zakary Michael Kline. ================= PUEBLO, Colo. - Harry E. Lewis Jr., 80, Pueblo, died Oct. 23, 2000. Graveside services and inurnment will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006, Letts Cemetery. The Rev. Kimberly Bowles will officiate. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, Pueblo. Mr. Lewis was born Aug. 11, 1920, in Spring Grove, Iowa, the son of Harry and Lela Lewis. He was actively involved in the Methodist church for many years. He also enjoyed boating, fishing and family activities. hi! i am writing to see if you or you can point me in the direction i need to go. I am looking for information on a "George Washington Lewis" born in Benton county, missouri in 1850 to 1854 . He died july 19,1923 in Alton, Illinois. His dad was suppose to be John W.Lewis ? george had two wives:first one--Missouri ? born 1859? and they had 5 children ?
