My gg grandmother, Margaret Lewis Moore, had a younger brother named Daniel Peelstraw Lewis, b 1807 probably Ashe County NC, d 1887 Marion County OR. Does anyone know why he was called Peelstraw?? Was it his real given name, or just a nickname. Thanks for any help. Joyce

Am writing you off-list for privacy reasons. I believe PEELSTRA (without the final letter, 'w') was/is a Dutch surname. Perhaps a grandparent was a Peelstra? He might have been named after a relative from Amsterdam, etc. Over the years, the spelling changed, like so many surnames do. I am looking for help with my 3rd GGF Daniel C Lewis. Sources are conflicting as to birthplace of RI or CT, with a range of 1810-1819; the date 25 Sep 1815 is a strong possibility. He was a Civil War veteran from CT [18th Regiment] and died 05 Oct 1898 in Willimantic, Windham, CT. His death certificate lists John C Lewis [born in Wickford, RI] & Viola Corey [born in Lebanon, CT] as his parents. RI State Archives notes a Daniel C Lewis born to Daniel Lewis & Sarah Ann Lewis on 25 Sep 1815 in Charlestown, RI. Looking for help with Daniel's birthplace & date and parents. Thanks. Cindy

Wow, I didn't realize how many Lewis and Haynes families are connected. I have run in to two that might or might not be of my line. Joel Lewis and Harriett Haynes of Pulaski. And Martin Lewis and Martha Haynes also of Pulaski. I think Harriett and Martha are sisters there fathers name is Galen Haynes. My Joseph Lewis was born I believe in 1839 he married Harriett Haynes in 1857. My Lewis family appears to have originated in Pulaski. But they definitely moved around a lot.and I won't be surprised to find they are related. Maybe a generation back? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. These families came to Arkansas from Wayne County, Tennessee. The Lewis family had previously been in Livingston County, Kentucky. I wonder if there is a connection with your Lewis and Haynes people. Harriett Lewis b. abt. 1800 in Kentucky married Jonathan Haynes b. abt. 1800 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Her supposed sister, Mary Lewis b. abt. 1809 in Kentucky married John Haynes. Their father is thought to be Earl Eason Lewis. Not all his children have been identified. There is much speculation and not a whole lot of proof.
