Hello, I only have 2 surnames on my family-tree which I would consider buying a DNA test for: LEWIS, KERR / CARR. Those are both surnames which go back to 1800 in England or Ireland - and no further back. * With the LEWIS name, I have one male relative I might be able to talk into taking the test. But, I would have to pay for it. (I also have a male "distant cousin" who might be talked into it.) To start this new year right, I've decided to order a "KERR DNA test." I have a male cousin who I'm going to contact, and I have a male "distant cousin" I'm mailing a letter to on Monday. I've heard from other researchers who want to find out if I'm connected to them, and they are willing to help with the cost. I'd like to know whether there is a "LEWIS DNA genealogy group" which is a support group for this surname. I went to this web site and, on quick look, I don't see a way to find out if a group is there. https://www.familytreedna.com/Default.aspx?c=1 As I've said before, my great-grandfather was born in 1859 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, and his father, John LEWIS, was born there, also. But, John's father, Richard LEWIS, was born ~1803 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. There are several couples there ~1800 who are possible parents. But, I don't know anything about them. And, I don't know if that family was always in County Shropshire. Betty (near Lowell, MA) * On both sides of my family-tree, I have ancestors who left Ireland or England during the 1800's and went to Canada, first. The majority of my ancestors can be traced back to the 1600's in the MA Bay Colony. And I stop there. But, the 1800's people I would very much like to get back to at least 1700. Remember to check the archives of all the Lists and Boards for your surnames and place-names. And, please remember to check the on-line auctions for for your surnames and place-names.
> > I'd like to know whether there is a "LEWIS DNA genealogy > group" which is a > support group for this surname. http://lewissurnamednaproject.com/ BTW, go with FTDNA. although the results aren't totally set up correctly on the page (as ftdna shows, it's important to have documentation and use the test to distinguish between possiblities, not just assume a like test result means you are related-for example, I can, with 90% certainty, be 6 markers off for a Lewis I might be descended from, as compared to others who take the test, after 10 generations. Mine did turn out this way, proving my ancestry, and unfortunately in some ways showing the Father of my Great-grandfather was his mother's Father, Harrison Lewis. But, let me caution you here. Sorenson does the Ancestry.com testing, and their customer service is absolutely worthless and unhelpful. FTDNA is the best-in fact, if you hook up with the Lewis surname project, you can get a discount most of the time. FTDNA lists off the shortcomings and positives on their site, and have a great reputation. Sorenson was cheaper, but their site organization is horrible. They put my tests results under my mother's name, and two separate accounts, and do not allow me to check my results with other's of my own last names. Their to MRCA is entirely fabricated, as I found out when I looked up things on genetic testing sites AND FTDNA. If I may, I totally regret my using Sorenson. I strongly and nearly hysterically suggest ignoring them, and your going with ftdna They do offer scholarships on the name site. Also, ancestry does not have surname groups publish results, so you can't compare them directly like ftdna does-which also does ysearch.org. FTDNA has a wonderful reputation. BTW, my mother's from MA, just near you. I was born in Marlborough Hospital, BTW. Please, choose ftdna and the lewis surname project for FTDNA. Don't waste your time with anyone else, not even as a joke.

Descendants of my wife's Charles Lewis include the later/younger Charles Lewis (who died about 1808) who married Mary Ann High, as well as Nace/Nasa Lewis, the George Lewis who apparently married Elizabeth King and Royal King Lewis. This family is part of Group 35 in the Lewis DNA testing project (which currently consists of two male Lewis DNA donors who are out of the above family). It does not APPEAR that the Samuel Lewis who married Plotemia Harvey was a member of my wife's Lewis family after all. I will leave it others to determine if the family of the Samuel Lewis who married Plotemia Harvey is or is not currently "represented" in the Lewis DNA testing project. I'm a Lewis descended from probably Samuel of South Carolina. I'm part of the research group as malewis who responded to your post on Dec 13. My group on the Lewis Surname Project is group 09, which we strongly suspect is linked genetically to Group 43. Given names that are known, or suspected to be, in our line from SC through GA are: John, Samuel, Azariah, Isaac, Benjamin, Larkin, Pleasant, Charles, Joseph, Jeremiah, Crawford, Harvey, James. These correspond with the names you listed. We have probable brothers Samuel, Azariah, Isaac and Benjamin in Edgefield County SC, with a possible father of John. The timeframe runs from about 1773 to 1800 in Edgefield, although Benjamin's line probably stayed there. A group of us has traced our line solidly back to Henry County GA in the 1820s and 1830s. Going back further as been difficult. We strongly suspect, through genetics, that we were in Edgefield and the four brothers listed above our members of our family. My gggrandfather, Zerah Lewis, said in the 1880 census that his father was born in NJ and his mother in VA. We strongly suspect Samuel was his father. We have not conclusively been able to connect our family group to the Edgefield Lewises, yet, but we have genetic and circumstantial evidence that this is the case. We are struggling to definitively link our line with the NJ line, and this could be a missing link. I am anxious to hear from you and to determine if our Lewis families are related and where they connect. This is very promising for our line.
