Surnames: Lasher Lesher Lescher Loescher Löscher Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TGw.2ACEB/279 Message Board Post: Hello, I was wondering if folks on this list could perhaps help me shed some light on some Lasher mysteries... I am the webmaster for an organization called the Lasher Family Association Inc. based out of Germantown, NY. If you would like to check it out go here: http://www.lasherfamily.org . I am currently trying to collect information and genealogies on the early Pennsylvanian Lashers for the website. More importantly I am trying to find the genealogical links, if any, to the Lashers of NY who emmigrated there from Germany in 1710. I noticed your earliest known Lasher was a Henry Lesher b. abt. 1711 in Schauffhausen, Switzerland. I was wondering where this information is found. Is this possibly from a passenger list? I have also seen elsewhere similar information on this same Henry Lesher, albeit, with the additional location of "Schauffhausen, Zweibrücken, Switzerland." Do you know anything about this addition of "Zweibrücken?" Why I ask is that in 1710 there were infact two Lasher families to emigrate from Germany. One, Sebastian Lescher/Löscher, from Hochspeyer in the Rheinland Pfalz (this and subsequent generations very well documented), and the other, Johann Jacob Lescher/Löscher, from Dellfeld/Rieschweiler, Duchy of Zweibrücken, in the Rheinland Pfalz (well documented in Germany, but not so here in later generations). Further, this Jacob Lasher infact had a son named Henry b. between 1710 and 1716 (and then disappears). I was curious if this could be worth researching int! o further, or if anyone has further information along these lines. To further complicate matters, in my research I've come across several possible early Lasher/Leshers in PA. Though, I have done no follow up research to date. They are as follows: Taken from "First Families of Berks County" Morton L. Montgomery (vol. 1 1883 Hist. Reg. by Egle) "Settlers established themselves along the Schuykill Manatwawny Creek...a settlement begun at Tulpehocten in 1723 by Germans on the Schoharie [a river valley in NY comprised of dissatisfied 1710 German emigrants originally located in the Hudson River valley, Germantown, NY]....later in 1726 another 50 families from Schoharie established themselves, and again on June 5th 1728..." "Among the settlers in the eastern districts along the Manatawny are found the names ... Leshers..." "Johannis Lischer of Providence had Abraham born Dec. 11 1732, sponsors the parents." "John Nicholas Loescher of Skippback, had John Vincentz born Feb. 26, 1733, sponsor John Vincentz Meyer." "John Lesher of Oley, Iron Master, died July 1794 leaving a wife Margaret and children John, Jacob, Barbara (married John Jacob Morgan), Hannah (married Geo. Focht), Maria (married John Potts, Jr.), Catherine (married John Feyther), and Elizabeth." "Mathias Loeser of Bethel died prior to 2 June 1767 leaving wife ! Catherine and children George, Christopher, Jacob, Matthias, Margaret, Maria, Nicholas..." If this information is correct, this leaves lots of possibilities. If one does the math here these Lasher/Lesher family/s would have removed from Schoharie, New York to PA at an age old enough to marry and sire children by 1732/33 respectively, making them born at least 20 years earlier about 1712/13. does anyone have these Lashers in there family lines or have any clues how to sort this info out into an understandable geneologies? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. John Lasher

The variations do tend to go on and on; however, in my own behalf, we found the Lesher to be derived from Loescher (with umlaut over the o) sourcing back to the Alsace-Lorraine area. Very best, Roy Lesher, Lesher List Administrator
