I hope we can document a connection. I have conflicting names for my 3rd great grandfather: Nicholas Leister, sometimes referred to as John Leister.. I suspect he was named Johann Nicklaus Leister. He married a woman named Margaretha LINK, and they had several children born in Dalberg and Wallhausen in the 1860s before they came to the USA. I'm not sure if Johann Nicklaus LEISTER made it to the USA or if he died in Europe. I do know that Margaretha came over, as did her sons Bernhard, Nicholas, John and her daughters Elisabeth and Anna Maria. They settled in the Troy Hill neighborhood of Allegheny city, Pennsylvania, which became part of Pittsburgh in 1907. Bernhard came over in 1866 on the S.S. Pennland, and his two brothers followed in 1867 on the S.S. Westernland. I have not located the passage for Margaretha or her daughters, or Johann Niklaus if he indeed did make the trip. (Of course, the brothers that I've mentioned could have made the crossing more than once, but this is all I have found thus far). I visted him there several times when I was younger. Our Cousin Karl Heinz Leister is currently the mayor of Dalburg. My Uncle and one Aunt still live on the Mosel river very near Dalburg. I visit germany when I can and next time I go I plan on looking up some records in dalburg and other cities nearby to try to find more of my german ancestors and where they went. My Great grandfather - Johan Leister had 9 children as well and we have several cousins still alive and doing well in germany and elsewhere around the world. I am in contact with some of them. My other aunt who now lives in missouri is also helping me to locate old family photos or records of our great great great great grandparents. If anyone has any info that isn't on my tree for the Leister's I would really like to fill in those blanks. Peter Leister was my Great great grandfather and some of his family his brother Johannes Nikolaus Lei! ster migrated to America in the late 1800's. They lost contact after the passage of time. So we never knew what had become of the "american Leister's" until now. This is so cool! :-D I still don't have any info as to who Peter's parents where and the list of all his sibilings. I hope to hear from some of my distant american cousins anytime either here or at my email which is Obladra5@yahoo.com. If anyone has questions or has pictures to swap or share that would be really cool. I'll try to upload more of the Leister pictures that I have in the near future. I was just photographing some tombstones at Most Holy Name cemetery yesterday to help Debbie (Moore) Lesslie figure out some of the PETRY line. I'm descended from one of Grossie's brothers, Bernhard LEISTER, then his daughter Josephine (LEISTER) MUENZER. Our common ancestors then are Grossie's parents, Margaretha LINK and Nicholas LEISTER (although I have variations on the first name of this man). They would be my 3rd great grandparents. Do you still live in Erie? I had heard that one of Jacob PETRY's sons had gone to California but perhaps it was a red herring. Author: sdbloomquist Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.leister/112.2.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The John Leister who lived next to the Petry's on that Census was your great-grandmother's brother. Your great-grandmother Elizabeth Leister Petry was born on 28 Dec but the year varies with the record. Her marriage license, church marriage record, and the 1910 Census indicate she was born 28 Dec 1868. I have a prayer card from her funeral which says she was born 28 Dec 1866. Her immigration year also varies with the record cited. The 1920 and 1930 Census say 1889, but the 1900 Census says 1890. As a general rule I tend to trust the oldest record, as it was closer to the actual event and less likely to be distorted by the passage of time. Of course, often times I've found that ancestors lied about their age on marriage records because you could not marry without parental consent until age 21. I have some Leister records, mostly concerning my direct lineage through Bernard who was my great-great grandfather and also your Grosse's brother. Grosse is German for grandmother, that's why the called her that. I don't have any really old photos from the Leister side except for my great-grandmother Josephine Leister Muenzer and her brother John and sister Elizabeth. (Yes, we have an Elizabeth in our line also, probably named in honor of your Grosse, who would have been her aunt). There are some Leister descendants here in North Hills, my grandfather's first cousins Doris Leister Dye and Lorraine Leister Gozzard. I could probably get at least one of them to meet for coffee sometime if you like. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The information we have is sketchy at best.So you are of Grossie's (as we called her)family. We honestly never even knew she had any!She never talked about them. My brother has her steamer trunk, and in the lid is a picture that has been glued in. We assume it is her as a young girl, but there is no other information. The Alexander, or Elexander A., must indeed be the younger brother Grammy called Adolph. Did you ever hear anything about his death? I remember Grammy telling me that Jacob died of cancer in the 30's. She also told me how people would come from all over Pgh. for the dentured he made. We never really heard much about Ernest, who also was a prosthetic dentist. Hollywood, eh? Hmmm, that's very interesting! I hope I can check that out. Would you happen to have any family pictures? Have you done a tree? Also, are you in the Pgh. area? Again, I am so excited to have this information. Thank you so much! Duffner. Here's an abstract of the marriage record at the church: Jacobum Petry; Wallhausen, Prussia and Elisabetham Leister; Dahlberg, Prussia. Witnesses: Nicolaus Leister, John Leister, Christina Hebron, Amalia Jaeger. Note the parish priests Latinized all the names in these books, so his name wasn't really Jacobum.. just Jacob. Same with Elizabeth.. she wasn't really Elizabetham. Your Adolph must be the one I have as "Elexander A. Petry" from census records. One of my grandfather's Leister first cousins remembers the family.. she told me that Ernest went to Hollywood and was a dentist for many stars there. Not sure if you can substantiate that story for me, but it is interesting. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
