Thanks, Nivard, I was afraid that was the case. William was a collier engineer, but whether that meant he was "schooled" or just that he trained on the job I wouldn't know. I seem to remember reading that George Stephenson had tutors to learn mathematics and such but that he taught himself about engineering.
