With the present popularity of going to exotic places to get married, for example the greek islands, Madagascar or Fiji I have found it difficult to trace some marriages. Has anybody any experience of this? Where would they have to go if they required a copy of their wedding certificate for a passport or similar? Are these marriages recorded in England? This has been provoked by a relative who works in China and has married a Chinese
The marriage would be recorded in the country where it took place. There may only be a record of it in the UK if (a) the marriage were carried out here, or (b) there may be a church record if a later blessing or similar ceremony was carried out. For a copy of a certificate for a marriage that took place in England or Wales, you should apply to the General Register Office.
