    1. [LEI] TEAT or TEATE family, Stonesby 1700s onwards

    3. Hi I'm trying to break through a longstanding brick wall and wanted to investigate whether part of my husband's Lincolnshire family had come from across the border. Hi GGG Grandfather John TEAT (which is how he signed himself although he is recorded as TEATE and even TATE in some records) was born on 20 October 1760. He recorded this in his Book of Common Prayer which is still in the family. He notes a number of other events, births and deaths including those of his sister and her apparently illegitimate son in the prayer book. Unfortunately he doesn't note his place of birth, nor his sister and nephew's names. He doesn't mention any other siblings in his notes. He was a blacksmith by trade and settled in Ropsely, Lincs by the time of his marriage to Susanna NORTH in Great Ponton, Lincs in 1790 and later moved to Ancaster, Lincs. As well as John TEAT b1760's date of birth, which he recorded himself, we know that his sister died in July 1835 and her son in September 1837 'forty years of age ilegitmate son'. We don't know where or when, or their names (his children were called John, Thomas, Henery, Francis, Elizabeth and Susanna - Henery/Henry and Susanna are from the NORTH side). I had previously (i.e. before the person with the prayer book found us) we thought that he was the John TEAT b1760 in Baston, Lincs but now that we've seen his prayer book the baptism is a few months before his birth. I'm therefore looking into the possibility that he is the John TEATE, son of John and Alice, baptised in Stonesby on 26 Oct 1760 and that his sister was Frances TEATE daughter of John and Alice baptised in Stonesby on 7 March 1762. Frances' son John TEATE (no father) was baptised in Stonesby on 8 April 1798. There is a death record for a John Teat in Melton Mowbray in 1837. Before I look any further into this - and possibly waste a lot of time and money - I wondered whether anyone on the Leicestershire list could lay claim to this TEATE family or can find out whether the John born in Stonesby remains in Leicestershire after 1790. I was also wondering whether anyone was aware of any online resources that can help with research into 1700s - 1800s Leicestershire and Stonesby in particular. Many thanks Sara
