Hi Sue, In both the 1891 and 1901 Censuses Ada BURGESS, born about 1875 in Enderby, was a servant, living at the addresses of her employers. In Leicester (22 Market Place) in 1901 and in Blaby (Leicester Road) in 1891. I can give you more details of the employers if you want them. In 1881, while Ada (niece), aged 6, was living with the family of Thomas and Mary Ann COLLEDGE in Marsdens Lane, Leicester, there was an Emma BURGESS, born about 1853 in Enderby, working as a General Servant with the family of Charles BOWLES, a master clothier and outfitter, at 5 Brighton Villas, Princes Street, Leicester. Emma was described as 'unmarried' but she is the only Emma Burgess that I can find that looks anything like a likely person. The Births Index lists the birth of Ada BURGESS in the Oct/Nov/Dec Quarter of 1874 in the registration district of Blaby, Area 7a, Page 33. I have searched 1875 and 1876 and this birth is the only likely match. Blaby is the correct Reg. Dist. for Enderby. I can't find any sort of match for a James BURGESS in the 1881 Census. There is a James GAMBLE but he is a married quarryman (about 30 something) living with his family in Enderby. If you already have Ada's birth certificate then you probably know more than I do. If you haven't got the cert. I think you are going to have to send for it. If you do decide to get the cert., let me know and I will double check the references before you apply. Also, let me know if you want any more information or if you have anything that might help any of the searches. Regards, Jack Allen. Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, U.K.
