Why would someone deny being in the Militia? My only thought is that perhaps he tried to collect money from both. * ANY man who is enrolled in the Militia, and who upon offering to enlist into the Army, denies that he belongs to the Militia, is liable, upon Conviction before a Magistrate, to be committed to Prison for Six Months, over and above any other Penalty or Punishment which he was thereby incur for obtaining Money on false pretences. 3. My understanding is that the Militia was like the present day Territorial Army and was localised either by geography e.g. Warwick (town) or or run by the local aristrocrat - e.g. Lord Lichfield. In the days when men were pressganged into the Forces (to take the King's shilling), it may be that Militia men were protected ?Sue Hope > From: jlcassani@hotmail.com> To: leicestershire-plus-l@rootsweb.com> Date: Thu, 25 Oct 2007 13:46:31 -0400> Subject: [LEI] Leicestershire Militia> > > According to my gg grandfather military records, he served about six months (1826) in the Leicester Prison for the reason stated below.
