Ian, Holgates, later Hall Gates, is between Warren Hill and Cropston Reservoir, and on the opposite side of Bradgate Park to the village of Newtown Linford. If you go to Google maps (www.maps.google.com) and put "Warren hill Newtown Linford Leicestershire" in the searchbox, you'll see a crossroads where you turn right from Warren Hill into Roecliffe Road. Move the map to the left with your cursor until you see Cropston Reservoir appear on the lower right side of the map, then click on 'satellite' and you'll see an aerial view of Hall Gates - a clump of trees bordering on Bradgate Park - in the middle of the picture. Behind Hall Gates and towards the top of the picture is a large wood with a rather suggestive shape! - Swithland Woods - and still at the bottom left of the picture, a corner of the reservoir. All a bit convoluted, but that woody bit in the middle is Hall Gates and was Holgates. Let me know if my directions are confusing and I'll start again! Jill (Cambridge, UK) > Can anyone shed any light on where Holgates is/was? TIA. Regards. Ian Phillpott
Oops! I didn't mean "still at the bottom left of the picture, a corner of the reservoir." I meant "still at the bottom right of the picture...." Dyslexically yours, Jill (Cambridge, UK)
