    1. [LEI] newbie looking for FRATER in Desford Industrial School early 1900's
    2. Kerry Frater
    3. Hello all and Merry Christmas. I have joined this list for one specific purpose. My Grandfather. For a number of years I have been trying to piece together his early life. He was born in Islington in 1889 and married in South Wales (where he then lived and died) in 1914. He is missing from the family in the 1901 census and I have been looking for him for a number of years. Another researcher came across an entry in the 1901 census at Desford Industrial School for a (as transcribed): Edward FRAKER both circa 1890 in London. An inmate committed by a magistrate. I have looked at the image on Ancestry and believe that it is Edward FRATER. I am looking to see if there are any records regarding the taking in and leaving of "inmates" from this institution. This might help me find out if he is or is not my Grandfather. I am also trying to find out which magistrate court committed him. Googling Desford School does show that they took youngsters from all over the country. Many thanks. Best wishes to all researchers. May the new year bring your ancestors closer and your problems further away. Regards Kerry

    3. Hi Kerry I would agree that its quite possible that the name is FRATER rather than FRAKER I do not see an Edward FRAKER registered around 1889 (in fact there would appear to be just one Edward FRAKER and that a death, on freebmd so far) Did you notice the series of numbers (in the name column) that someone (presumably the person filling in the institutions form) that may be useful if you find any records anywhere The number next to his name looks to be 863 but I wondered if it was a room number as other numbers are repeated You are no doubt aware but although called the Desford Industrial School it was roughly equidistant from Ratby, Desford and Kirby Muxloe, the site is now a retirement village Have you tried the Records Office in Wigston, certainly worth a call Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > I have joined this list for one specific purpose.
