Hi Adrian, Have you tried Trade Directories ? You can find some BOTTRILL families here: <http://www.historicaldirectories.org/> I spotted an Elizabeth in Lutterworth at a quick glance, but you may need to search further to see whether William is somewhere in there. Best wishes, Mike Gould -----Original Message----- From: leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Prince Sent: 24 December 2007 10:33 To: LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS@rootsweb.com Subject: [LEI] William Bottrill I am new to the mailing list and am trying to solve a mystery in my wife's tree. Her second great grandfather, William Bottrill, was born in about 1817 (possibly in Swinford), married Mary Ann Evans on 3rd January 1846 in Lutterworth and emigrated to Adelaide (South Australia) in about 1853. His father was Thomas Bottrill (b 3/7/1785 in Swinford) and his grandfather was William Bottrill (b in Clifton, Warks). The mystery is that a great uncle (also William Bottrill) of the 1817 William supposedly fled to Adelaide in the late 1830s to escape arrest due to harbouring dissenters against the Corn Laws. He was a stonemason and supposedly left behind a wife and eight children. We had a look for signs of this earlier William in Leicestershire earlier this year and had an intensive look in Adelaide last month but couldn't find any trace. Adelaide was only founded in 1836 so there were very few people there at that time (just four stonemasons) and none of those were William Bottrill. In the circumstances, he may well have changed his name. Can anyone help me from Parish records or MIs? Any additional information on the people mentioned above would also be appreciated.
