Hi Heather I have been having a bit of a play with it as I thought there may be a way of easily getting some BND information from the personal pages but I am finding it difficult working out how to weed out useless hits Eg search Guardian Personal then within for deaths It returns Guardian in the search results as it is at the bottom right of each item Have you or anyone any suggestions bob -----Original Message----- From: leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of The Quineys Sent: Wednesday, 14 November 2007 6:32 AM To: LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS@rootsweb.com Subject: [LEI] Gazette Website Although not directly Leicestershire related, I've come across a very useful website which I'm sure will assist someone with their research. I was looking for when our ancestors' family firm ceased trading and someone directed me towards the London Gazette archives. Although the company was based in the north of the country, the details of its receivership were there in the London paper and helped complete another section of the family jigsaw. The link is http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/. Not having visited the site before, I used the Search Builder (under Historians header) and it was soooo straight forward to use. I would certainly recommend it (and it's free :-) ) Hope it helps someone Heather Q ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message -- No virus found in this incoming message. Hi Bob, Have you tried using "exact phrase" after clicking on "search the archives"? If you're searching for a person, try putting in John Smith, but if that is not successful, try Smith John, or whatever the name is. That requires an exact match of name, so weeds out all the pages with the forename and surname appearing separately on a page. If still not successful, you may then have to try middle names in there as well. If the name you're looking for is unusual, then putting it in "with all the words" box may be good enough. Hope this helps, Mike Gould Leicestershire -----Original Message----- From: leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bob Sent: 15 November 2007 06:50 To: 'The Quineys'; LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LEI] Gazette Website Hi Heather I have been having a bit of a play with it as I thought there may be a way of easily getting some BND information from the personal pages but I am finding it difficult working out how to weed out useless hits Eg search Guardian Personal then within for deaths It returns Guardian in the search results as it is at the bottom right of each item Have you or anyone any suggestions bob -----Original Message----- From: leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of The Quineys Sent: Wednesday, 14 November 2007 6:32 AM To: LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS@rootsweb.com Subject: [LEI] Gazette Website Although not directly Leicestershire related, I've come across a very useful website which I'm sure will assist someone with their research. Hi Bob Forgive my confusion but are you commenting on a different paper? perhaps the Guardian that has recently come online with a free 24 pass available The Guardian I found to be all but useless as there does not appear to be a way of turning off the soundex type search, therefore giving thousands of completely meaningless hits which mask the few you are looking for, I quickly gave up with it, the odd few I did find I already had from the Times I have found the Gazette to be much better since the recent revamp and less erratic in its results I found advanced search gave the best results using either exact phrase or With all the Words Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Heather > I have been having a bit of a play with it as I thought there may be a way > of easily getting some BND information from the personal pages but I am > finding it difficult working out how to weed out useless hits > Eg search Guardian Personal then within for deaths > It returns Guardian in the search results as it is at the bottom right of > each item > Have you or anyone any suggestions > bob <snip> > The link is http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/.
