    3. Hi Julie - As to whether Family Tree Maker will work with Vista I do not know. I use Legacy. However, with respect to Vista I have a strong opinion. My wife and I each have laptops with Vista. Even though the computers are new they run very slow on Vista. Both have one gigabyte of RAM, which should be plenty. However Vista was largely developed for a generation of computers that are not in wide usage at the moment and are quite expensive, so I would hold off on getting a laptop with Vista pre-installed, although at some time you could upgrade the operating system to Vista. I prefer my older laptop (2 year old HP) because it is faster and easier to use. I have had a lot of different laptops through the years and I prefer Dell. I have had bad luck with both Gateway and HP laptops (both used by my wife), with no help at all beyond the initial warranty period. Dell laptops are not flawless but at least I have found the service better when there is a problem. Since I assume you are in England you would be well advised to consult local computer shops as to reliability and warranty with respect to makers. When all is said and done, however, I prefer desktop machines - they are less finicky and easily repaired and upgraded. [I can do my own maintenance on a desktop, so that may affect my preference.] Good luck. 3. Hi Julie We have a Toshiba Satellite laptop at home from PC World running Vista Basic and it's fine - if you run anything better than Basic you need to make sure you have a decent graphics card or switch off the Aero interface which is what slows everything down on lower spec machines. You can also change the interface to 'classic' which basically means it looks like XP. I can send you instructions on how to do either of those if you want. The Toshiba laptops are really good, would definitely recommend them, and ours only cost £350 - think you can get a better spec for not much more than that - although obviously I don't know where in the world you're based! Anyway, as a computer professional I use Vista every day and other than the fact that you'd be well advised to go for as much memory as you can afford (minimum 1Gb, 2Gb will give you good performance) and a reasonable graphics card if you want to use the graphics functionality, I I haven't got anything to say against it. Most software now runs OK on Vista, although for some you might need to download a patch, the main thing will be to check on the websites for your main software and stuff like printer/scanner to make sure you can get Vista drivers. Hope that helps a bit Em On 30/11/2007, Arthur G Broadhurst <agbroadhurst@gmail.com> wrote: > > Hi Julie - > > As to whether Family Tree Maker will work with Vista I do not know. 3. Hi Family Tree Maker 2005 has a very good layout, BUT you can not Copy & Paste into the notes. I have gone back to version 7.5 Stephen ----- Original Message ----- From: "julie" <julie.cat1@ntlworld.com> To: <LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 30, 2007 6:18 AM Subject: [LEI] Family Tree Maker > Hi > > I'm getting a new Laptop & I'm toying with the idea of Vista or sticking > with XP & I was wondering if any of you on this list could help with the > following questions? > > 1.. 3. Sorry to disagree but I have just "cut and paste" from one person to another in FTM 2005. I also "C&P" out from FTM to a Word document and into FTM from a Word document. Mike Hi Family Tree Maker 2005 has a very good layout, BUT you can not Copy & Paste into the notes. I have gone back to version 7.5 Stephen
